LITTLE MAN, YOU'VE HAD A BUSY DAY
Paul Robeson with Ray Noble & the New Mayfair Orchestra
Words by Maurice Sigler and Al Hoffman; music by Mabel Wayne

- as recorded June 27, 1934

Evenin' breezes sighin', moon is in the sky
Little man, it's time for bed
Daddy's little hero is tired and wants to cry
Now, come along and rest your weary head

Little man, you're cryin', I know why you're blue
Someone took your kiddy-car away
You better go to sleep now
Little man, you've had a busy day

Johnny won your marbles, tell you what we'll do
Dad'll get you new ones right away
Better go to sleep now
Little man, you've had a busy day

You've been playin' soldier, the battle has been won
The enemy is out of sight
Come along there soldier, put away your gun
The war is over for tonight

Time to stop your schemin', time your day was through
Can't you hear the bugle softly say
Time you should be dreamin'
Little man, you've had a busy day

Little man, you're cryin', I know why you're blue
Someone took your kiddy-car away
You better go to sleep now
Little man, you've had a busy day

Johnny won your marbles, I know, I tell you what we'll do
Dad'll get you new ones right away
Better go to sleep now
Little man, you've had a busy day

You've been playin' soldier, the battle has been won
The enemy is out of sight
Come along there soldier, put away your gun
The war is over for tonight

Time to stop your schemin', time your day was through
Can't you hear the bugle softly say
Time you should be dreamin'
Little man, you've had a busy day

I'm new at the Mudcat but in the few day's I've been here I have found songs I have been looking for for many years. I had forgotten this one all together and It was the only one I ever recall my mother singing.

I must add my thanks for bringing back a few good memories.

Blessings Wolfgang and to You for asking Dano.

I've heard tell there was a computer hack in Bagdad who posted the tune to "Mary Had A Little Lamb" (MIDI) and a certain holy man---actually a dervish of sorts---played it over and over and over and over as he spun wildly down the streets of that city. A real little lamb (a small goat) followed him for miles. The whirling dervish fell to the pavement, where the lamb ate him! (Must've been hungry.) Sadam Hussein was passing by at that very moment and he sang out to the lamb, "MIDI lamb, you've had a dizzy bey!"

I have a CD with a 1999 copyright date called "Vintage Children's Favourites" with "Living Era" or "25 Original Mono Recordings from 1926-1950" possibly parts of the title. ASV Ltd., of England, seems to be the publisher.

Other numeric info on the case says:

CD AJA 5274 and LC 07967

It does show up at CDNow (As of today) but without the "u" in Favourites.

The CD includes the Robeson version of "Little Man", also "The Laughing Policeman" by Charles Penrose
"The Prune Song"; Frank Crumit
"The Wedding of the Painted Doll" Layton and Johnstone
"Barnacle Bill the Sailor" Frank Luther & Carson Robison
"The Runaway Train" Vernon Dalhart
"The Teddy Bears' Picnic" Henry Hall
"Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" also by Hall
"Grandfather's Clock" Harold Williams
"I'm Popeye the Sailorman" Billy Costello
"Ragtime Cowboy Joe" the Hill Billies
"The Owl and the Pussycat" Stuart Robertson
"Heigh-Ho" The seven dwarfs
"Balloons" The Ovaltines and Monte Rey
"The Dickey Bird Hop" Gracie Fields
"The Bee Song" Arthur Askey
"Three Little Fishes" Maurice Denham
"We're Off to See the Wizard" The Ken Darby Singers
"Run Rabbit Run" Flanagan and Allen
"Christopher Robin at Buckingham Palace" Ann Stephens
"Swinging on a Star" Bing Crosby
"The Woody Woodpecker Song" Danny Kaye & The Andrews Sisters
"The Thing" Phil Harris
"Tubby the Tuba" Danny Kaye
"Goodnight, Children, Everywhere" Vera Lynn

(Actually, I typed all that so forum searches can find it in case anyone else is looking for old children's songs...)

I don't think you'll be disappointed. Robeson could sing the phone book and make it sound good.

It's the second or third time I've referred to that CD to answer questions here, so it's a nice one to have. I'd never actually heard "Barnacle Bill the Sailor" although I'd seen references to it before I got the CD. We sang a corrupted version of "The Prune Song" in my giddy youth, though.

My mom (who is 84) got a real kick out of this CD too, and knew most of the words to the older stuff.

My mother used to sing that song to us --

Little man, don't cry now
Mommy knows you're tired
You have had a very busy day.
Better go to sleep now, Mommy's boy
you've had a busy day.

You've been playin' soldier
the battles are all won
the enemy is out of sight.

Close your eyes now, ...

That's all I can remember. Hope it helps.

Hmmmm...the song I'm looking for has these lyrics....

Little man you're crying, I know why you're blue
Someone stole your kiddy car away
Better go to sleep now, Little man you've had a busy day...

Someone stole your marbles? Tell you what I'll do
Daddy will buy you new ones right away
Beetter go...

Is this the same song as on the CD, I wonder? Any help will be appreciated...I know there was a bridge but can't remember it at all...

Thanks...

From: GUEST,Julian Roberts

Little Girl you're crying, I know why you're blue,
Someone stole your tricycle away.
Time to go to bed now,
Little girl you've had a busy day.

Suzie broke your dolly, tell you what we'll do.
Dad'll buy a new one right away.
Time to close your eyes now,
Little girl you've had a busy day.

You've been playing house dear, your daily work is done,
The "dishes" dried and out of sight.
Put away your toys now, it's time to go to sleep.
Your play is over for tonight.

Come and say your prayers now, 'fore you sleep away.
God bless mother, dad, and brother too.
Rest yourself in sleep now,
Little girl you've had a busy day.

(I had two sons and two daughters. They all got rocked to sleep to this song in both versions. The lyrics above are mine. julian@julianslaw.com)

Thank you, since my family and I never had the pleasure of hearing a recording of this song, we had began to believe my mother had just learned it from her Mother (which considering my Grandmother was just a little hard to believe) the last time I heard my Mother sing that song was to my nephews and seeing the words brings tears. My Mother had a wonderful voice although she herself said that when feeling poorly one day, she ask God, "Lord what is wrong with me" and she told me His reply was, "WELL FOR ONE THING YOUR CAN'T SING". So thank you for the memories. By the way my sister sent me the link.

My mother used to sing that song to me. I can half remember the melody and very few of the words. Thanks to this posting, I'm nearer finding something that I thought I'd never come across again. So please, an MP3 would be most welcome.

With respect to the musing "This is a folk song?", this posting proves that it is has been handed down orally through the generations; just like a traditional folk song, but there the similarity ends. Anyway, distinctions and labels sometimes do get a bit blurred.

I can remember as a six or seven year old (about the time it was first unleashed) finding this song completely sickening.   I couldn't have put it into wordsat the time, but I felt it was patronising (to kids)and sickeningly treacly. Pity. Ray Noble was a good song writer.

Surprisingly nobody has mentioned Connie Boswell's rendering of this song until now. It was recorded in 1934 with Victor Young and his Orchestra and is available on various Boswell-CDs now. Connie's dark musical voice croons its way through this little ballad very pleasantly, with a touching 'bless your little hart .. good night baby' at the end. Sentimental? yeah, sure, but what's wrong with that?

I first heard this song on a Chet Baker album titled The Artistry of Chet Baker, copyright 1955. Chet was a great crooner with his trumpet and voice. I would love to come up with the music score for Little Man, You've Had A Busy Day.

I sing in an A Capella quartet, and I think that song would be a great addition to our lisst of songs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Johnny took your marbles, tell you what we'll do,
Mom'll get you new ones right away

You've been playing mommy
But now your day is through
Your babies are all fast asleep.
Dishes are all done now
The household work is done,
Play now in dreamtime little one

Better go to sleep now, little girl,
You've had a busy day.

She used to sing me to sleep with it every night when I was young after my parents got divorced and my mom, brother and I moved back in with her. Now if I can't sleep , I sing it to myself, and eventually, I'll sing it to my own kids(:

Hi .what happened to the words that were part of this song I heard when I was young about the toy soldiers that the boy had that got broken by someone and the dad or singer tells the boy don't worry they are only made of clay so dad will buy you new ones right away?I think the words went something like this: Little man you're crying,I know why your blue: Someone broke your toy soldiers today, don't worry, they're only made of clay anyway. Dad will buy you new ones right away. Better go to sleep, now, little man you've had a busy day. I'm not exactly sure if these words I put here as a part of that song are right but I think these words I put here are close to being right at least.Anyway,I always liked hearing this song when I was young. From Howard.
