Scout Songbooks Index PermaThread

Subject: Scout Songbook Index PermaThread
From: Joe Offer

This is an edited PermaThread, and all messages posted here are subject to editing and deletion.
This thread is intended to serve as a forum for indexing Boy Scout and Girl Scout/Girl guide and Camfire songbooks, and songbooks from similar youth organizations.

A number of us have large songbook collections, and we just can't post every song from every book. We figured that at least we could post the index pages from songbooks. That way, a song title can turn up in a Google search, and lead to the person who has a book with that song in it.

If you'd like to post a request for one of these songs, post it below and we'll make sure your request gets to the best place and finds an answer. -Joe Offer-

    How to use Songbook Indexes

Use [CTRL-F] to find the song you want, and then post a request for the song at the bottom of the thread. We'll contact the songbook owner and obtain the lyrics, and we'll post an answer or a link in your request message.

Subject: Index: Sing Together: A Girl Scout Songbook (1949)
From: Joe Offer

I told Azizi I hadn't seen a copy of Sing Together earlier than 1973, so I pleaded with him to post the index of his 1936 edition (above). I guess I was wrong. I found a 1949 edition, with an introduction by Janet E. Tobitt, Music Consultant to the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. Tobitt says the 1949 edition is a combination of the Girl Scout Song Book and Sing Together (apparently the 1936 edition that Azisi posted). Tobitt, by the way, is the author of The Dittly Bag (1946), a book sold and the Girl Scouts, but which is not a Girl Scout publication.

Here's the index:

Joe, I have a couple of wee songbooks that are probably not Scout songbooks, but ones I got at camps. While many songs and hymns are well-known, there are some real gems in there, and include quite a few traditional songs such as "The Merry Golden Tree," and a few from a family named "Ritchie."

They don't go in this thread, though, as they aren't "Scout" songbooks. Any suggestions on where those indexes might go?
Post 'em anywhere, Jeri. Here is OK, or in the school songbook threads. We'll sort them out once they're posted. Note that all the songbook threads are permathreads, subject to editing.

Thanks for posting those indexes, Joe.

BTW, I just wanted to correct one reference that you made prior to posting those indexes

Just for the record, I'm a SHE and not a he.

That being said, did Boy Scouts have songbooks such as these?

Thanks,
Ms. Azizi

Ooops! Sorry, Ms. AZ. Yes, I'll get some Boy Scout/Cub Scout songbook indexes up soon.

I was a leader for 14 years and the Brownie Smile song was always a staple of any gathering. I have a few older songbooks, 'official ones' as well as books created by troops for their own use--both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. These books are words only. Would they be helpful to anyone??

I can find neither sonk book in a current edition- do they exist?

I gather from the book that there is an actual Cabaña - in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Apparently, "Canciones" is no longer available. I checked www.girlscouts.org, and here are the books they have for sale:
  • Pax Lodge Songbook (from UK)
  • Sangam Sangeet/Sangam Songbook
  • Girl Scout Pocket Songbook
  • Our Chalet Songbook
  • Our Chalet Songbook II
  • Brownie Girl Scout Songbook

Interesting that they are different. One edition of Canciones had a pocket for a cd (missing, of course). I tried the website of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS!), and they have a cd for sale, but no song books. 1980 (your copy) is the only date I found.

This is the 1963 edition I had when I was in Boy Scouts. It claims to have 150 songs - the old edition plus 50 new ones. I also have a 1995 printing of the 1970 edition, but I don't think any of the songs are different.

When Israel was in Egypt's land
When the Saints Go Marching In
When you come to the end of a Boy Scout day

Work for the Night Is Coming

Yawning in the Morning
Y'heave ho! my lads, the wind blows free
Yodeling song

I'm sorry, but I don't like this anywhere as much as I like the Girl Scout songbooks. I used to do song workshops at Scout training sessons, but the Powers That Be always pushed me to teach songs from the Scout Songbook. It was no secret that I didn't like the Boy Scout Songbook. Look at all the good songs they changed into Boy Scout propaganda songs.

A site I found more or less by accident some time ago.

Pack 86 Songs gives lyrics for quite a number of songs. Some are obviously "Generic Cub Scout Material" and quite a few are claimed as "original compositions by Clare Mansfield." A copyright is claimed for the originals, but permission is given for non-profit (Cub Scout) use.

The "list of songs" at the top of the page apparently shows only the ones by Mansfield(?). Highlight, Copy, Paste Special – Unformatted Text gets about 97 pages of lyrics. There are a few notes interspersed that indicate sources for some individual songs. Some, but not all, give a "To the Tune of: " notation. A few songs indicate possible links to "music" and/or "midis" but I haven't checked those out.

I can't really judge how "valuable" these lyrics may be, but someone with more recent Scouting contact might find something useful there.

Boy, Melissa, I've looked and looked. Here's what I found from the Girl Scouts themselves:

    Musical Heritage

The love of music started with founder Juliette Gordon Low, who used the Kent County Song Book, which contained folk songs from the British Isles. As Girl Scouting grew in the U.S., there was need for a songbook that reflected American life.

The first songbook published by the Girl Scouts, Girl Scout Song Book, was in 1925 and is a collection of tunes recommended by the girls themselves. "Singing," the foreword began, "is one of the most important expressions of good fellowship." The Girl Scout Song Book was considered very progressive for its time. It featured Negro spirituals and songs about cowboys, patriotism, sea shanties, religion, and included songs from all over Europe.

In the 1930s, Janet "Toby" Tobitt joined the Girl Scouts and played a key role in shaping the organization's musical history. First a camp counselor and later a music consultant for GSUSA, Toby brought her musicianship and passion for collecting folk songs to Girl Scouts. She designed her Sing Together songbook of 1936 to provide material for Scouts' Own ceremonies and other occasions, believing in the power of music to bring everyone together.

So, it appears to me that the first Girl Scout Song Book was 1925, and the first Sing Together was 1938.

The first songbook has a green cover..picture with a tree and girls. When I worked for the council, I meant to copy the index of it so I could dig up some songs to fit the scouting era I favor but never did get it done.

The first GS handbook startled me by being so fanatical/odd.
The second handbook was first printed in early 20's (1920 or 1921) and that one delights me. I didn't even know there was a songbook printed alongside the handbook (handbook revision around '26, but same basic book until the early 30's) Now I just keep wanting a copy. Maybe I'll be the one to come up with an index--I do bid it on ebay occasionally.

It seems like I remember reading something about the songbook being made around the time of a big gathering..possibly the first International Gathering? (I've forgotten what those gatherings are called) Something like that would have been a good time for collecting recommendations from the girls to make the book.

'Kent County Song Book' would be neat to see.

Joe--funny you should mention that, about "Bill Grogan's Goat" being more common in the U.S. I can't speak for the rest of the country, but at my camp in Virginia, I was nearly booed offstage several years ago for singing "Bill Grogan's Goat". Apparently "My Highland Goat" is the official version 'round those parts, and imitators were not to be tolerated.

Somewhat peripheral to finding "Boy Scout Music" is a 1969 printing of a "Music Merit Badge" book that (for no reason I can think of) I recently scanned to a pdf. The book is "about music" but has almost no music in it. There is one "scout song" that IIRC is called "On My Honor" and about 15 or so "bugle calls" that appear to be mostly scout hallucinations unrelated to "standard calls."

[Note that I scan to clear the bookshelves, so the original book is "gone."]

Since I scan to "print standards" the file on hand is 46,499 KB, (72 pages) which is a little large for some email servers, and "smallifying" is a bit tedious; but if someone would be really interested I might be able to find it again to figure out a way to give more information or get a copy made that would be more suitable for sending somewhere.

PM if interested?

John

I was reminded of a camp song we sang (when i saw the thread about a "theme song" for cheese) We used to sing a song about it;s cheese that makes the world go 'round---see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRieJJkkbWw)

then i found a song called little birdie...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmA2bcZHUY8&feature=related (with a wing on the left and a wing on the right, the little birds sleep all through the night)
but i found a couple of camp song clips on you tube where the birdies get shot...we never had guns in our song in girl scouts!

Janet Tobitt also was responsible for "The Ditty Bag" which had several revisions through the years. In addition, there was a "Songs of the First Training School for Girl Scout Officers." - copyright date is 1922

I have a PDF master list of Girl Scout songbooks (from right before the Melinda Carroll era) indexing 45 pages of songs and the songbooks they are published in at https://songscouting.wordpress.com/what-about-these/what-about-girl-scout-songs/

The Brownie Smile Song (copyright Harriet Heywood still in effect and managed by GSUSA) is also found in the "Brownie's Own Songbook"

Thanks for thinking of me, Jack. Ther two Gilwell books are really cheap here, so it's probably better for me to get them here instead of paying the cost of postage. I just ordered them.

I had planned to spend time in Edinburgh and see you and Tattie Bogle this last September, but then I figured out a way to squeeze in a trip to Belfast and didn't have any time in Edinburgh at all. I should be back in 2-3 years. Jim and Susie Malcolm have a new tour in the planning stages.

I have spent the last 9 months recording a lot of Girl Guide and Girl Scout songs for a YouTube channel. It has 450 songs uploaded so far, and I intend to keep going for as long as I have the will!

Please check it out:

Thanks Bethan for reviving this thread, I had a book I'd been meaning to add. (Your channel is very good, btw!). I bought it at a thrift store so I have no personal knowledge about it, but the name tells me it's from the DC area, and a council from Haymarket, VA bearing the same name has an active Facebook page (click). I can add any lyrics if so requested.
