19 Jan 05 - 04:00 AM (#1382059) Subject: BS: Firewalk Challenge From: Georgiansilver On the 11th February, I will be undertaking the Firewalk Challenge...which involves walking 20' over hot coals, which are burning at 1236 degrees F. To put that into perspective...paper ignites at 451 degrees and alluminium melts at 1100 degrees. This is to raise money for St Barnabas Hospice, which is a hospice for the terminally ill..people dying of cancer etc. If you would like to make a sponsorship donation, please PM me and I will provide an address to send the money. Thanks, in anticipation and Best wishes. Mike. |

20 Jan 05 - 08:49 AM (#1383117) Subject: RE: BS: Firewalk Challenge From: Pied Piper Asbestos is unnecessary; the fire is made with the embers of burnt wood that at the time of the fire walk have been reduced light porous carbon that is only burning in a thin layer at the surface. This thin layer is indeed very hot, but as soon as a foot cuts of its oxygen supply it stops burning and the extremely low specific heat capacity of the material means that very little heat is lost to the foot. In short no magic just Physics. Now if they were to walk on rocks at the same temperature; that would be a very different story. Still good luck Mike and I hope you make lots for the charity. Next week I will de-bunk the tooth fairy. PP |

20 Jan 05 - 01:09 PM (#1383357) Subject: RE: BS: Firewalk Challenge From: Cats I saw people fire walking at a Folk Festival in Bulgaria a few years ago. They hyped themselves up into an almost trance like state and carried icons. Having spent all day, on and off, watching the bonfire burn, I had to go and see it done late at night - it adds to the spectacle! Good luck, brilliant cause. Relax and enjoy it. |

21 Jan 05 - 10:04 PM (#1384883) Subject: RE: BS: Firewalk Challenge From: hilda fish go for it and good luck. done it myself a few times and it's more about challenging the fear within oneself - the walks not so hard once that's done. Its a mighty, spiritual and very personal journey and 'bravery' is the reward in a funny sorta way. Just for walking on a few hot coals!!!!!! |
