Tech: how do I keep my cookie?

19 Jan 05 - 02:26 PM (#1382434)
Subject: BS: how do I keep my cookie?
From: Ritchie

when I reset my cookie it goes into a temp internet file, which my wife methodically clears. Can I move my cookie and if so where to?

I have windows xp if that means anything.

thanks

Ritchie

depends on the browser you use..."Usually" you can specify certain cookies to be exempt from cleaning...I almost never use IE, but I can give instructions for Mozilla/Firefox/Opera....

If nothing else works, clean the folder, set a new cookie, copy it to someplace convenient, then replace it as needed. Shouldn't take more than 5 or 10 seconds. XP has a DOS-like window that would make it a snap.

Maybe you need to discipline your wife! ;-)

If that's not an option, alternatively, you might set the cookie as read-only. I suppose that's possible.

Cookies never last long in my home, especially if they're chocolate. :-)

I don't bother. I clean all cookies every morning, then re set the ones I want. There are only 3 of them anyway.

surfing sessions..

zero tolerance, take no prisoners..
since last spyware/browser hijack attack..

gee, guest, that's sorta like a lion tamer saying he puts bandages on all new bites while he in in the cage, rather than working out how to keep the lions from biting...that's what they give you that whip & chair and pop-gun for!

WinXP always sets up Administrator, All Users, and Default User "accounts," and it's almost impossible to turn it on the first time without putting in a "Named" user, which would be the one you normally open up. It's pretty easy to add another one.

Make one for yourself, put a password on it, and make a separate one for her. She can have her own cookies, and delete them whenever she wants to. If you don't give her your password, she won't be able to delete yours - unless you also let her log on as Administrator.

Just be ABSOLUTELY SURE if you start making additional accounts, that you put a password on the Administrator account and DON'T LOOSE IT. You may find, even if you assign "Administrator" authority to some of the other users, that some things will require that you log in as "THE ADMINISTRATOR" to make system changes.

In IE, you can also use File - Import and Export, follow the Wizard to export your cookies. Then after she deletes them, you can use the same routine to put them all back in - if you remember where you put them. The cookies are simple text files, so you can usually just copy them and paste them somewhere else, but when you paste them back there is a "cookie index" that doesn't always update and the cookies - rarely - may not show up. If you use the Import Wizard, they're almost always usable. Some cookies also "expire" after a time, so bringing one back from a really old backup location may not make it work if it's died in storage.
