BS: Wilfried Schaum incommunicado

Hi folks,

for some time I was incommunicado. I had to stay in an infirmary where they cut away a quarry in my kidneys.
So I missed a lot of threads. Anybody who asked about some problems involving German songs and language is kindly invited to inform me giving the number of thread.

Hope everything is ok now ...

Wilfried, you wouldn't be my Secret Santa by any chance, would you? Mine seems to have gone missing.

Welcome back, Wilfried. I appreciated your help with my questions on German flutes. :)

May you be pain free and well soon, etc. :)

Wilfried, we could answer all questions re German songs except that with the flugel dudel (flying bagpipe) and I see you have found it already.

Too much fluid through the kidney can lead to stalagmites (or tits?). I guess you should restrict the carbon part of the fluid, so you'll have to drink beer only after waiting for half an hour at least or to chose wine.

All the best

Wolfgang

Hm - tell that to all those women getting implants to get tits ;-)

But you really don't want STALAGtits! Wolfgang, thanks for the laugh, whether you meant it or not.

Wilfried, I hope you've done forming small boulders in your kidneys! A glass of cranberry juice a day is supposed to help prevent them. Wine is probably good, too, but I have no evidence of that.

In any case, I hope you feel good very quickly.

Wilfried, my very good friend, what Dr Fibs means is that she has a perfect convalescence home for you in Portaferry that has accomodation reserved when you are fit to make the journey in two weeks. And many of your friends will make the trip to visit you.

Hope you mend well and soon, old friend.

Thanks, dear friends, for your good wishes. I'm painfree now, but I have to go again to the infirmary for hammering away the rest of a stone by lithotripsy (a megasound transmission, don't know the E/A word.) And it's in 14 days, just on the heighdays of carnival. But they promised me that I shall in my bed again at 13:11, when the telly starts with the transmission with the big juggernaut at my favourite carnival town Mainz.

I laughed a lot about Wolfgang's post and the following puns. But let's cling to the philological correct stalactites.

Apropos the fluids - I suffered a lot in the infirmary. I was ordered to drink about 3 liters a day, but I could only get mineral water. Now I am able to recur to beer and wine and am recovering very fast.

A travel to Portaferry I should like very much to see my dear friends I have met in Hull and elsewhere, but, alas! besides my next ops (see above) it's a money problem. I have just started to hoard my cents for the next Eurogathering. The DVD from the last one I did give up any hope to see in my natural life, so I'm saving money, too.

Cheers, me dears!
Wilfried

I never could remember which of the stala.... was the one standing up and which the one hanging down until I realised that those that have the tit-bit in them are the ones doing hanging. Now I can remember without fail.

Wolfgang, I remember it by the same donkey's bridge *) ;-)

*) in German, a mnemonic trick is called Eselsbrücke - which literally translates to donkey's bridge (Esel = donkey, Brücke = bridge)

Here's the PC mnemonic:

The bit with the 'mit' in it looks like a ter-mit-es hill, that is pointing upward

Well for goodness sake get out of that communicado at once and don't let me catch you in there again!

Hope the lithotripsy goes well!

We were always told by the guides at Jenolan Caves that the best way to remember the difference between stalagmites and stalactites is that the "mites" go up, and the "tights" come down.

Hi folks!
Thanks again for the good wishes, and the funny discussion about -mites and -tit(e)s. Looking again at the stones removed I must confess that they are looking more like - excuse the term here in a folk forum - Rolling Stones.
I am still at home but I hope to be able to go to work next Monday.

Cheers

Wilfried

G'day Wolfgang, Wilfried & JennyO,

The English language mnemonic I remember is that: Stalacmites might get to the roof ... and, if stalactites hang on tight they won't crash to the floor.

BTW: I would have thought (if I encountered the phrase) that Wolfgang's Eselsbrücke should be the same as the Pons Asinorum ... but that is now any (student's) difficult proposition - originally the Fifth Proposition of Euclid, in book 1 of his Geometry.

Of course, pedants (like that glorious old rogue E. Cobham Brewster ... of the entertaining - if not too reliable - Dictionary of Phrase and Fable) maintain that it is no pons at all ... and should really be the pedica asinorum: donkey's stumbling-block!

Regard(les)s,

Bob

Hi Bob - Eselsbrücke is the exact translation of pons asinorum. Thanks for the hint.

Big red letters that go across the screen in a Noreen sort of inspired way.

Happy Birthday Wilfried!!!

Shame you missed being Piscean by so few days.
