Struggling with a quiz

24 Jan 05 - 12:08 PM (#1387057)
Subject: Struggling with a quiz
From: GUEST

I've got problems with finishing a quiz, the the type that goes

366=D in a L P the answer being 366 days in a leap year

the following I've yet to complete

40 = RWA
0 = SN to I
47 = S on a OH
8 = C in W
4 = W and a F
8 = G in a B

Any thoughts

I find it difficult to keep up with the way they keep changing county boundaries and names, but I have a feeling that recently, if not now, there were 8 counties in Wales...might this be the answer to 8=C in W?

A bushel is normally a dry measurement of 4 pecks to a bushel

4 quarts, one gallon
8 pints, one gallon,
2 gallons, one peck,

The fact that there are 8 gallons in a bushel does not imply that you are measuring a liquid.Corn, for example, was measured in gallons and bushels, because you can pour it. But it's not a liquid!

Where does this quiz originate? Often things like this will have a different emphasis if it's US or UK based.

Everything that starts with "O" is "an".

U.S.A. Dry weight - a bushell = 32 pounds....quality of the grain in the bushell measured is an entirely diffenent story. Variety an moisture are crucial to final price.

A couple mid-plains U.S.A. turn of th 1900's guides taught in the schools.

Rough rule for cooking:
A pint's a pound - the world around
And two cups equal a pint.

Rough rule for "pie curst" (by weight)
Half as much shortening as flour, half as much water as shortening, a pinch of salt and a pinch of BP.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

gargoyle,

"...A pint's a pound - the world around..."

No so I'm afraid.

As I learned it:
"A pint of pure water weighs a pound and a quarter"

But then we used the Imperial pint rather than the American 'short' pint.

Walrus

I appreciate your knowledge of English Grammer would seem to exceed mine, however this quiz was set by a squaddie and perhaps his knowledge of grammer, like mine, is less than yours.

Cheers

Knowing the general thrust of a lot of military humour, I would guess the answer to this one may be unprintable, politically incorrect, and refer to Iraq. But I cant think of anything appropriate.
