Looking for lyrics and/or source for the song "Friendly, Liberal, Neighborhood Ku Klux Klan". Think it was done by Chad Mitchell or Kingston Trio. Friend had it on an 8 Track back in the 60s. Haven't been able to locate a copy or find any reference to it. Thanks

"Your Friendly Liberal neighborhood Ku Klux Klan" was recorded by the MItchell Trio (Joe Frazier, Mike Kobluk, John Denver) in 1965 on their album "Violets of Dawn" (Mercury MG21067/SR 61067). It was also released as the "B" side of the "Violets of Dawn" single (Mercury 72544). The song is included on a 1998 CD release called "The Best of the Chad Mitchell Trio, The Mercury Years" (314 534 400-2 Mercury Records, a division of Polygram). The LP can still be found by combing the used record stores and web sites. I have never seen the single. But the CD you should be albe to get most anywhere from the bigger retailers locally or on line. Happy hunting.

Hey, Folk... I'n new to this list, and usually lurk a while before submitting, but desperation invites importunity...

I would really like to get the lyrics to "Friendly, Liberal, Neughborhood Ku Klux Klan." I've tried the newsgroup(s) and all I know of the search engines, and looked for old records, etc. Any help to be had?

PS: I'm also looking for a recording and/or chords for Shel Silverstein's "The Diet". Remembering the banter of the Kinston Trio (circa 1965) I'd be happy to trade for words to songs you may not have, like "John Henry", or the "Blue Tail Fly"! Thanks for any help.

The Chad Mitchell Trio recorded 'F,N KKK' on their 'Violets of Dawn' album. The song has been reissued on CD: 'The Very Best of the Chad Mitchell Trio: The Mercury Years' Polygram 534400. CD Universe has it.

Regards, Stewie.

Some of the Mitchell Trio's best stuff was the political/social satire songs. Alma Mater, Billie Sol, KKK, and the John Birch Society(in the DT) are all very well done.

Well, no chords or info on recordings, but you may like the page anyway. Shel Silverstein lyrics are here, including The Diet.

Well, as a matter of closure, several years after I first posted an inquiry about this one, I -- a slow guy -- have come upon the chords to Friendly, Liberal Neighborhood Ku Klux Klan. Disclaimer: I got the chords from a later performance by the Mitchell Trio (with John Denver singing lead), but it sounds like they way they always did the song. For myself, the similarities make me want to use the tune and progressions from "John Birch Society," but they are different.

(Tune for just the first two lines,"is there a tavern in the town…")
[C] Is there a klavern in your town, in your town?
[C] If not, then why not have us [G] down, have us [G7] down?

You'll [C] never recog [C7] nize us; there's a [F] smile upon our face. We're [C] changin' all our [Am] dirty sheets and [D7] cleanin' up the [G7] place
Yep, [C] since we got a [C7] lawyer and a [F] public relations [Fm] man. We're your [C] friendly, [Em] liberal, [Am] neighborhood [F] Ku Klux [C] Klan

Yes, we're your [F] friendly, liberal, [Fm] neighborhood Ku Klux [C] Klan
Ever [C] since we got that [Am] lawyer and that [D] public relations [G] man
'Course we [C] did shoot one [Am] reporter, but [F] he was just obs [D] cene
And you [C] can't call [Em] us no [Am] filthy names - What does [D] Anglo-[G] Saxon [C] mean?

Spoken:         Allemande left, allemande right, the Ladies' Auxilliary is meetin' tonight
'Cause the Klan's collected so much cash that now, by gum, we're rich white trash

Now, we've heard it said our leadership's not qualified to lead
Well I'm tellin' you that just ain't true - Why three of them can read.
Take a Grand Exalted Dragon, now some folks think he's bad,
Well, you should meet his sweet old mother, and her brother, who's his dad.

Yes, they're your friendly, liberal, neighborhood Ku Klux Klan,
And he's gonna run for governor 'soon as he's out of the can
We're all from fine old families, the pride of all these hills. Yes, seven generations at the same illegal stills

Spoken:        Had a little rally the other night, Shot up town in a fury
Luke's arrested, Pa's on trial, And the rest of us are on the jury.

Now, we've heard them call us deadbeats, and we'd like to say we're not
We'll all stand on our record, and that's one thing we've all got
And we only have that arsenal so that you won't raise no fuss
And if you don't like that, then call the cops, 'Cause the chances are, they're us.

Yes we're your friendly, liberal, neighborhood Ku Klux Klan, But somehow we went from the fire to the fryin pan
We never learned to hold a job, and we never learned to write,
But boy, we sure have learned the ropes, 'cause we use them every night.

Spoken:
Now, when Congress calls, you don't get stuck; just start confessin' and pass the buck
The Klug blames the Klaxon, the Klaxon blames the Kleagle, the Kleagle blames the Grand Imperial Eagle
The Eagle blames the Wizard, the Wizard blames the Dragon
The Dragon takes the blame, but he's just braggin'

Now, we're out to show the Congress that we're oh so nice and meek
Why we never even take the Fifth, 'cause we drank that all last week
And you'll never hear us shootin' or hangin' people high,
'Cause we're learnin' to respect the law and to have an alibi

Come, come, come, come to the church in the wildwood... (in background)
Spoken:        Oh, those dirty, lyin witnesses, Lord, forgive them what they speak
We would go to church and pray for them, 'cept we blew it up last week

Yes, we're your friendly, liberal, neighborhood Ku Klux Klan,
And we sure do thank that lawyer and that public relations man
So, we're sorry that we hung them, but they did have quite a tan
And it sure confused your friendly, liberal, misunderstood
Your friendly neighborhood Klan who says,
What's wrong with a hood?
Your friendly, liberal, neighborhood Ku Klux - (spoken) grab your Cadillac and head for the hills.
