Tech: E-Mailing Midi Files For Instant Opening

When I usually send a midi file to someone I attach it to an E-mail message. The recipient on the other end has to click on the attachment to open the midi. However I have received e-mails from people in which the midi starts playing instantly without having to click on anything. I know that many of the on line greeting card companies have this feature but I have received such e-mails from private individuals as well. How would I go about sending an e-mail where the midi tune would start playing simultaneously with the message. Do I need any special hardware or software to accomplish this ?

they probably use some sort of java script to accomplish this. Many people shut off auto-run java script to minimize trojan and script worm infections.

take a look at this page which explains that scripts that run midi files have been used to exploit weaknesses in MS applications. Even when you are sure all is safe, it is not a good idea to do this, as many have blocked the process.

A lot of these neat tricks were invented by folks who had NO idea what nastiness they would be used for. Too bad, but it's better...for now...to just attach the .midi.

I HATE it when my nice quiet puder wakes up my husband napping in his recliner nearby. If I want to play a file or open any attachment, that choice should be mine. Most people feel this way IMO.

MMario, would you please tell me how to do this? (I tried to find it in Help, but it was not there.)

I can't comment on any of the others, but in IE the principal settings you may need to change are at Tools - Internet Options, click the Security Tab, and the the Custom Level button. It should be "mostly obvious" what most of the check boxes do.

For most sites, the top box is about the only thing you should have to change from default, assuming you've got the latest updates on your OS and on IE. I have had to turn it on to "Prompt" to let HP download some Java printer test utilities, but other than that I've never found a real need to change anything. If you don't have recent security fixes, your "zones" may be defined differently, so you may want to turn off a few more things.
