From: Josher hi Gtd I've been through Cropredy by boat before but not when the Festival is on and i was just wondering how busy it got and where was the best place to moor up and how early you need to get there to get a good mooring, thanks for the info Cheers Josher |

10 Feb 05 - 12:20 PM (#1404730) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: Zany Mouse Hi Josher As an ex-Josher owner I think you should check the locks there. I have a vague memory they are quite short. I certainly couldn't get my 70 footer in there. Rhiannon |
11 Feb 05 - 03:21 AM (#1405484) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: Josher Hi Zany Mouse Sadly I don't own a full length boat, she's only 50ft so no probs. Have cruised the Oxford before but never attended the festival. If I had a full length it would have a Gardner in it. Cheers Josher |
11 Feb 05 - 03:44 AM (#1405508) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: Dave Bryant All the locks on the Oxford canal are 70' by 7' so there should be no length problem unless you've got a 72' "large Woolwich". Anyway Josher said he'd brought his boat down the Oxford before. I once moored up at Cropredy during the festival with no trouble, although "Panacea" was only 34'. You might have to moor some distance away or be willing to breast up though. If I remember correctly, the festival is on the west bank and the towpath on the other side, still there's plenty of bridges. Is your boat actually an authentic "Josher" (for non-canalcolics, a design of boat named after Mr Wedgwood) ? |
11 Feb 05 - 07:21 AM (#1405675) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: Peter K (Fionn) During the 80s there would hve been no problem geting a mooring right by the festival. Don't know about now, but I think you'd be fairly sure of finding a space within a mile. Definitely the way to go. |
11 Feb 05 - 07:39 AM (#1405694) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: Josher hi Dave a 'Josher' was a design of boat made for and by the canal carrying company Fellows Morton and Clayton and the boatmen named it after Joshua Fellows one of the owners. a 'Josher' has very fine lines and distinctive bow with a double bend. Some of the modern builders make a very good job of replicating the design. Thanks for all the advice hope to get to Cropredy on the Monday of the festival to make sure of a good spot. Cheers Josher |
11 Feb 05 - 08:04 AM (#1405717) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: Zany Mouse JOSHERS RULE OK! Sadly my old boat (Quail) died a couple of years ago but I still have very fond memories. She was truly beautiful. Incidentally she was a REAL Josher. Dave - I seem to remember Panacea from my boating days. Have you had her long? Did she used to belong to a lady called Libby? Rhiannon |
11 Feb 05 - 05:51 PM (#1406397) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: GUEST,joanna We did travel by canal barge back in 1997 and moored easily in Cropredy, had a lovely time, but dont know how mooring is now good luck. |
13 Feb 05 - 02:34 PM (#1408298) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: Josher hi joanna Thanks Joanna but I don't think you took a barge down the Oxford, because the definition of a barge is a boat on inland waterways which has a beam over 7ft. as the locks on the Oxford are only 7ft wide you must of travelled down the canal in a narrowboat. Sorry to be pedantic. Josher |
28 Feb 05 - 05:46 PM (#1423305) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: GUEST,joanna hi Josher, Sorry about that!!! as a nerd in canals and canal boats I was unaware of the differance, I will correct myself by saying (We hired a boat and had no problems mooring during the festival that year) Having spoken to my other half he laughed and said It was deffinatly a narrowboat that we hired. Please forgive the bleb in me. Love Jo |
28 Feb 05 - 06:39 PM (#1423371) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: Mingulay Don't worry Joanna, as a boat dweller people are always asking if I live on one of those narrow barges, or is it a long boat you have? One becomes accustomed. |

01 Mar 05 - 03:41 AM (#1423620) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: GUEST,Patience So "Josher" even though you are so pedantic I assume you don't actually own a Josher...... |
01 Mar 05 - 07:06 AM (#1423716) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: Josher Hi Patience yes and no I own a modern boat that has a josher bow but not an original boat built by Fellows, Morton and Clayton. Josher |
01 Mar 05 - 11:04 AM (#1423873) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: greg stephens Let's be fair, Josher, lots of serious boaters deliberately refer to their narrow boats as "barges"(or even "gaily painted barges when they've had a couple of pints): this is in ironic reference to the fact that they know perfectly well they aren't barges, and are thereby laughing at those who who don't know that they aren't barges. Such are the multiple layers of English irony. |
01 Mar 05 - 06:29 PM (#1424347) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: Mingulay You only get multiple layer of English irony with a rivetted hull!!!! |

02 Mar 05 - 04:41 AM (#1424693) Subject: RE: Cropredy Festival by boat? From: GUEST,Mingulay at work Good job you haven't got a Josher, Josher. Minimum 3'6" draught when empty means you drag the arse on the bottom quite a bit. |

I will look out for all those boats and owners listed here.... Mine is 67' not a josher bow and called Vigornia - teh Roman Name for Worcester, yes I live on it too! It should eb inresidence in October at the Banbury folk festival and Canal day - anyone else making the journey? Sadly it will not be in residence for cropredy - ah well can't have it all. Andy |

From: greg stephens Just to use a boaty thread for something else: I have just been drafted in to help organise some apsects of the Stoke-on-Trent Canals Festival, which is currently scheduled for May 28/29..at the Etruria canal museum at the junction of the Trent and Mersey and the Caldon. It will be very music-friendly(though not primarily a music fest). More details later, but put it in the diary if interested. |

From: Josher Will be somewhere down the bottom end of the T&M so will miss it If we are diversifying, don't forget the Middlewich folk and Boat festival 17th to 19th June lots of music and boat related activities. There will no doubt be someauthentic Joshers in evidence. There is also a demonstration of horse boating techniques. www.middlewichfestival.org Josher |
