posted on another list:
Jim Capaldi, who died yesterday from cancer aged 60, was the drummer with the rock band Traffic, which he founded in 1967 with Steve Winwood, Dave Mason and Chris Wood; having co-written, with Winwood, much of the band's material, he later became a prolific and successful songwriter.

Traffic had a huge influence on my music listening as a young person (age 11 -14) and it's sad to hear of Jim's demise, and only 60!

My brother the drummer emailed me with this news several days ago. I was about to post it here when I saw this thread.

Capaldi, I now learn, was little brother Paul's greatest single influence as a drummer ~ something I had not known before.

Paul is ten years younger than I am, so we didn't really grow up together. I knew that he spent his high school years working in an R&B trio with a couple of grown-up black men, not with other white teenagers in a "garage band" situation, and so I didn't ever think he was greatly influenced by the current rock/pop music of the time. Reading his "in memoriam" appreciation of Jim Capaldi, however, I learned how many hours he spent playing along with records in our parents' basement, and how very much effort he put into emulating Jim Capaldi's work with Traffic ~ especially the dazzling cymbal technique which became a hallmark of Paul's eventual style.

I'll have to go back and listen to those Traffic albums again, with fresh ears.

By the way, in relation to the current discussion of the Cream reunion, Paul also offered a couple of remarks about how far superior he has always considered Jim Capaldi to the more widely lionized Ginger Baker...

Jim Capaldi and Martyn Bennett. Two completely different musicians but both ahead of their time and responsible for some amazing music. Both gone in one week. A sad start to 2005. We'll miss them.

sIx, by any chance are you related to sEvEn? I knew a sEvEn once (we called him "Lucky") who was married to a sIx, but I think they were the Lincolnshire sIxes, not the Hereford sIxes....

Or maybe you can claim kin to this celebrity?

PoppaGator .... I'm afraid that is an old urban myth. You have the story all backwards. sIx is not scared of sEvEn, because I turned myself upside down (very easily) ... became a nInE. nInE ate sEvEn! That's the true story.

Guest .. No, I cannot claim kinship to any of those. Very good though! :)

I saw Traffic at Leeds University in 1967 - just after the release of the "Hole in my shoe" single. They were great. I loved the early Traffic albums - and was a big fan of Dave Mason's solo work.
