Forgive me if this sounds personall. But I met a Martin Ryan once who is a Chemistry Lecturer and an authority on Irish Trad. I wonder if you are he ?

That sure sounds like him. I met him in Galway last Sept. He's a Chemistry prof like I used to be before retiring. But I'll let him speak for himself.

S. in Seattle

Thanks - we wait until we hear from the man himself

Dunno about the "authority" bit - but I plead guilty to having been raised as a chemist!

Maybe the one and same ?? The man whom I met used lecture in Athlone or somewhere in the Irish midlands. he also had a keen interest in the birds (of the feathered variety)- particularly in the preservation of the corncrake haunts in the wetlands of the River Shannon. How close am I getting ?

Far too close....

Cé tusa? PM if you prefer.

p.s. Conrncrake now very scarce, I'm afraid. Those times of birdwatching in the dark, having had a pint or two in Shannonbridge, are almost gone!

Apologies.

Friends, kindly pretend that you never saw the preceding post. I thought that I was sending a PM to Martin and now see that I have been broadcasting to the universe.

And then I don't know how to delete the damned thing. Coming to the age of 74 you will appreciate that the new technology when I was growing up was the reaper and binder. At least, tahnk God, I didn't say anything too personal

Hi, Com Seangan -
You have to ask one of us editors to delete a post. I deleted your post and sent it to Martin Ryan as a personal message. If you register as a Mudcat member, you can communicate with him directly by personal message - if Martin ever gets around to getting his cookie reset.

Joe

Between using the Mudcat backdoor, shuffling between different computers, moving house etc etc my cookie tends to get overcooked regularly!

p.s. That said, I don't see the redirected PM on this machine.
