04 Feb 05 - 06:55 PM (#1399489) Subject: BS: Spatulence From: jacqui.c I'm away for a few days and come back to find the 'Cat infested by spatulas! Why spatulas? What about colanders, or salad tongs? (Bobert could tell you all about the latter.) I think that this is a flagrant act of favouritism toward a very minor piece of kitchen equipment. Now, if they were talking chopping boards - that's different. Plastic, wooden, glass, marble - all sorts of shapes and sizes. An infinite variety to talk about...... |

I myself don't own one, and never intend to. I am all spatulated out, and think it is a case of mass histeria (I met a hissing terrior once, it was evil) HIS teria, because, men and spatulas, well, you know. Myself, I like a good cooking bowl. welcome back jacqui. hope that ole man of yours is keeping well! x freda |

04 Feb 05 - 07:05 PM (#1399501) Subject: RE: BS: Spatulence From: jacqui.c Mmmm - cooking bowls - definitely worth a thread. I used to like the old fashioned ones with the brown exterior and white interior that mother used to mix cake mixture in. Kendall's fine - in the kitchen at the moment making himself a rice pudding - he couldn't find any nutmeg so he's using cinnamon instead. Sure is nice to have a domesticated man. |

04 Feb 05 - 07:37 PM (#1399527) Subject: RE: BS: Spatulence From: Bee-dubya-ell Okay, here's my take on the spatula phenomenon, and I'm the one that started the damned mess. When I started the "How Many Spatulas Do YOU Own???" thread, I was looking for the most absurdly mundane, unromantic, innocuous, bland and unexciting thing I could think of to base a thread upon. I mean almost everybody has a spatula... or a dozen... or three dozen. Nobody ever pays any attention to them. Spatulas are kind of like your own name. You take your name for granted and never pay much attention to it. But, if you say your own name over and over again it eventually becomes a meaningless sound and you say to yourself, "Ya know, 'Bruce' (That's my name. You can insert your own name in its place. Unless your name is Bruce.) is really a stupid word. Why in the world did my parents name me that? What in the hell is a 'Bruce' anyway?" At that point, the idea of one's name shifts from being part of one's reality to being a surreal concept. It appears that, for a handful of Mudcatters, an analogous phenomenon has occurred with the idea of a spatula and/or the word "spatula". "Spatula" no longer refers to a mundane cooking utensil. It now refers to an as yet poorly defined surrealistic concept. The aim of all the spatula threads is to uncover the true nature of that new concept and to redefine "spatula" in light of that new understanding. I know this is pretty heavy stuff, so if you'd like to go lie down now, I understand. Now, is there anyone who still needs to know why this is called the "BS" section? |

I'm delighted, but not at all surprised, to hear that Kendall is a civilised guy who knows the value of nutmeg on a rice pudding! Raisins or sultanas go in there nice too (and in porridge, although I could get sporranned to death for that piece of sacrilege). S:0) |

06 Feb 05 - 09:45 AM (#1400607) Subject: RE: BS: Spatulence From: jacqui.c Hi SJ The rice pudding didn't turn out as well as he hoped. Problem is that, in our local supermarket, we can't find Pudding Rice - you know - the round grain stuff that was quite common a few years back. I don't like rice pudding so don't know if it's still available in the UK but all you can get in Hannafords is savoury rice. Kendall used a round grain that was designated as sushi rice and it didn't work too well. If we can't find it out here I think I shall have to ask my daughter, who works for Waitrose, to bring some out in April. |

06 Feb 05 - 04:56 PM (#1400992) Subject: RE: BS: Spatulence From: dianavan Sushi rice is very glutinous and meant for sushi (easy to mold). Other than that, almost any rice will do. Try putting a few cardamon seeds and some almonds in that mixture. Changes the pudding into a Persian treat fit for kings. |
