A Guest requested the full lyrics to this song in the Have I Given Anything Today thread in the BS section. I thought I'd put them up here, too..

This is the song as recorded by the Fairfield Four

HELP FOR THE NEEDY

Have I given anything today?
Have I helped some needy soul on my way?
Just to know I've done my best
Let me go home to take my rest
Then my name, my name, my name be written there today

CHORUS:
Today (oh, today), today (oh, today)
Have I helped some needy soul on my way?
Just to know I've done my best
Let me go home to take my rest
Then my name, my name, my name be written there today

Have I given anything today?
Have I helped some needy soul on my way?
From the storm to the sun
Have I wounded anyone?
To weep a weep a weep or worry Lord, today

The tenor sings the first verse, and the bass the second, and they alternate repeating the same verse as the spirit moves them. Harmonies are doo-doots, except for the (oh, today) responses on the chorus.

You gotta hear it to fully appreciate it... it's done a capella. The Gospel Messengers do it pretty much the same as the Fairfield Four.
With a lot of eneregy.

Jerry

The Fairfield Four sang HERE (A Prairie Home Companion, November 15, 2003):
Segment 4

00:50:33 "Help for the Needy (Today)" - The Fairfield Four
This song was written by Thomas Dorsey (copyright 1939). The original title is "Today." The score is in Bernice Johnson Reagon, ed., We'll Understand It Better By and By: Pioneering African American Composers (Smithsonian, 1992, p. 148), and in Great Gospel Songs of Thomas A. Dorsey (Hal Leonard, 1988, pp. 38-39).

Thanks, Masato:

I haven't seen the lyrics in print and don't have either of the books you refer to. There aren't any toehr verses, by chance? It sure would be nice to have another verse.

(It's so good to see you here, Masato! I've missed your contributions..)

Hi, Jerry, nice to talk with you.

      TODAY

1. Have I given anything today?
Have I help'd the needy soul on the way?
From the dawn till setting sun
   Have I wounded any one
Shall I weep for what I've done today?

   CHORUS:
   O today, O today, O today,
Have I failed some great acclaim on the way?
Just to know I've done my best
As I go to take my rest
Let my name be with the blest today.

2. Have I made some person glad today?
Did I help someone who had lost their way?
Did I counsel with the sad
Try to make some poor heart glad
And share with them what I had today?

3. Have the Savior's name I hailed today?
Have my feeble efforts failed on the way?
If I've failed some soul to guide
Deep in love and peace abide
I find joy to know I tried today?
