BS: Test for ID of ISP Addresses: Joe Offer

07 Feb 05 - 09:27 PM (#1402114)
Subject: BS: Test for ID of ISP Addresses: Joe Offer
From: GUEST,I Want to Know

Mr Offer or other Clones,

Can you tell from my ISP address who I am if I post as GUEST or GUEST, I WANT TO KNOW or any other GUEST posts.

How about if I never registered as a member?

How about if I am a member, but sometimes post as a GUEST?

Many Internet sites post the ISP address of the poster. If that was done here that MIGHT prevent some of the worst posts.

Thanks,
Guest

GUEST IWTK:

I am not one of the Clones, but I do have knowledge and experience in this area.

The answer to your question is: it depends -- but yes, it is more than theoretically possible. I've done it myself on more than one occassion.

Having said that, I'm not going to say anymore. To do so would involve a long, technical discussion and possibly teaching you things that I have neither the time nor the inclination to do. If you truly want to know the mechanics of this, I suggest a good course in the administration of Unix-based networks since Unix, in its various flavors, has long been the de facto standard for the Internet.

It gets messy.

I find the shield to be a pain in the arse. You have to hold it in your hand and it slows down typing. I fashioned mine into a beret, and put a swoosh on it with magic markers. That way I can pickup good looking womyn while I am spying on them.

The average internet user does not realize the amount of information that is transmitted through your web browser without you having to make a single post. You merely have to be logged onto a site, for this info such as: computer name, host name, IP address, ISP, geographic location, city, town, province, state, country, etc., pages viewed on website, how long one is logged onto a web site, and more. Firewalls do not prevent this information from being transmitted.

I say again, this information can be logged by any web master, from people just visiting a web site. It is not necessary whatsoever to make a post, for this info to be revealed. Lot of people assume a false sense of security thinking "oh I'm just logged on as a guest and not posting, so therefore no one knows I'm here.' Think again Bucko. :-)

A while back Clinton stated that there is no anonymity on the Internet. This is most certainly true. And when Max says he knows who every single person is that visits here, it's no word of a lie. There is nothing illegal in this at all.

But the simple rule is, if you don't want your privacy "violated" do not use the Internet.

GUEST of the acid fingers:

James Robert Pitts had his fingerprints surgically removed in, I think, 1941. This was done by having the skin on the tips of his fingers saved down COMPLETELY and replaced with skin grafted from his chest. He was still captured and identified by the ridges on his skin in the next section of his fingers down from his fingertips. Once that happened he was dead: as the only person without fingerprints he was easily identified every time he was picked up.

By the way, acid will scar your fingertips but the scars themselves provide unique identifiers -- and if they eventually go away, guess what genetically determined ridges show up again??? It's been tried, like Pitts' surgery, it's exquisitely painful, and it doesn't work.

Sorry 'bout that. If you want privacy on the Internet or the World Wide Web, don't use either one.

no need to be scared...fact is, you 'can' be 98% anonymous if you are willing to work hard at it, but it is usually WAY too much trouble for the average person, just as it usually too much trouble for someone to 'identify' you, if you don't want to be known... except as just a set of numbers. The CIA has its special techniques, but I think that usually involves getting a court order for records from an ISP.

The point is, there's a big difference between being able to identify you well enough to drive to your door, and being able to block certain sets of numbers from access to your site.

Just be nice, and no one will have any reason to do either.

I have a friend who likes to visit blackjack sites. From time to time, some strange person will start a fight with himself, just to stir up trouble. By this I mean that he logs on under more than one name, making inflammatory statements and creating the impression that a real schemozzle is occurring. Apparently he hopes to sucker other people into the fight so he can sneer at their emotions.

When this happens, the site posts a notice saying that it has been determined that So-and-so and Who-knows and What-dya-callit are all the same person, and that the thread is being stopped. Sounds fair to me. The troublemaker has no right to take advantage of other people's time and equipment.

If people use internet explorer its not hard to search their history (sites visited) and bookmarks.

If people use Firefox, Netscape, Mozilla or Oracle it's not hard to check their history and bookmarks. I'm not familiar enough with other browsers to talk about them.

And here's a thought for all you paranoids out there:

They don't have to get to your computer! When you push the "do-it" button, your message is forwarded to a server somewhere. That server sends it to another server, and so forth, until it reaches its destination. They can put a tap on any of the servers and read what you've sent! Yes! Believe it, 'cause this time I ain't lyin' to ya.

There is no privacy -- learn to live with it.

Yup. I am now a mod on my band's forums, and managed to out one of our members who was back in his home state. He thought he'd be able to post anonymously.

It took all of about two minutes to copy his IP (from the anon posts), run an InterNIC on it, and pin down where his server was. Got state and city right off that, which in this case was enough. If I'd needed to, I could very quickly have pulled a lot more.

I recently posted to a folk list that I joined years ago. Strangely enough this time it sent back a reply saying I needed to confim I was really a person, not a spammer, or I couldn't post.

The message showed the brand of computer I have, the browser I use & various other techo stuff which I did not understand. I forwarded it to the administrator to sort out & received a puzzled apology as he had no idea why I had received the message (especially as my message had posted normally!!)

Another example of the mysteries & power of the internet

Joe Offer,

I recently tried to register on the MudCat site as a regular member instead of my four year history as a GUEST, due to my new ability to get through. My outfit has gone from Netscape-based Novelle to MS Outlook, which apparently allowed me to start to register. However when I started to register and clicked Submit, your system responded that my MudCat name was already registered. I don't believe that anyone other than I have used the name "Claymore" though I have tried to register before, under my older system, with no success. Could you email me at moore.donald@jobcorps.org, and tell me what I can do to become legitimate (in a membership sense, as I do know my Father).

You can also call me at (304) 724-3437.

Incidently, I don't care what you guys can do to track me. I prefer it as it insures that no other rascal can impart my wisdom to the great unwashed under my imprimatur. Thanks for all your work.

Claymore...that IS probably you, but it needs the password you used originally, (plus the ability to set a recognition cookie)....if you tell it what email you used originally, you can get your password....otherwise, you'd have to modify your 'name' to be slightly different.
