BS: Flickr - this is fun...

Any other Mudcatters using "Flickr". It's "a photo organising/sharing service" and I found it through an enthusiastic piece the other week in the Guardian - here is a link to the article, and that explains how it works better than I can.

And here is a link to Flickr. Very neat and open-ended.   It's commercial, but not excessively so - there's a reasonable free non-paying members and visitors get a reasonably fair deal. I see it's Canadian. That figures.

It's based on a tag system - here's a set of pictures I found through typing "folk" in the tag search. (And here's a link to some photos I have put up.)

McGrath, I love your photos on trying to stop the war in Iraq from starting. Where did you take them?

On the march in London in February 2003, on the eve of the war. There's never been a march of anywhere near the size - estimates varied from one to three million. Nobody knew how to estimate teh size, because there wasn't anything to compare it to. Of course the government didn't take a blind bit of notice.

Glad you like them, Pauline. My favourite is the one with the Guinness bodhran, which says a lot about how folk can make the artificial boundaries we often draw seem irrelevant.

One of the good things about Flickr is the way anyone can post comments on pictures, and then comments on the comments, and it can turn into a discussion thread. And then, when someone makes a comment on a picture that is interesting you can click along to have a look at their own pictures and so forth.

What a fantastic appplication. I love the idea of self-metadating. This is a digital image archivist's wet dream ;) I signed up straight away!

Nice pictures of Loughstock!   And a good idea to use "Mudcat" as a tag. I'll stick it on any pictures of mine with music related content. (In fact I've already done it.)

It works with digital phones too.

It's brilliant. I've used up my free limit already, and am definitely going to pay for the 1Gb of uploading per month.
I liked your photo of Burano Kevin - makes me want a holiday.

I think it could get to be as addictive as Mudcat.

One thing making me hesitate about upgrading to Pro is, I don't like passing out my creditcard number online, and they don't take cheques (and I've heard nasty stuff about PenPal, which is the system they prefer.)

But that 1 Gb and so forth is very appealing...

I suggest that any Mudcatters putting stuff up there should make a point of tagging at least one photo as Mudcat, because that puts us in touch over there.

It has been as addictive for me, although I haven't uploaded. I can search a simple word such as "http://www.flickr.com/photos/docman/3691133/" and explore for half an hour.

I posted the set of pics with the concertina players to concertina.net. For those who are interested, here's the responses.
The comments by Geoffrey Crabb are most enlightening -- Tom

Those comments really should be on Flickr itself. Why not post a link to them, in the comment box below the pictures on Flickr? (You can put in links to outside sites in the comment boxes, I've done it with a few of mine - for example this one)

I love the way with the Internet we get people throwing up new facilities - "social inventions" - and then other peple come up with new ways of using them, which weren't really envisaged. It's happened with the Mudcat, and it's happening with Flickr. Like with what curmudgeon did just now

Time to take another look; there are new pictures including ( I think) Martin Carthy and Nrma Waterson, Lisa Carthy? and someone who reminds me of Mudcat pictures of Dave Bryant. It would be nice if someone who knows would identify others in this set of photos -- Tom

When I looked just now they've got the names on - except the Norma Waterson one, and I've put that in myself now, as a comment.

I might make an album from our current Argentina trip - taken 1,100 photos so far.
