Registration details are available from the Center at 212-757-3318. I understand the catalogue with this and many other music courses is being printed now. An open Singers' Circle will follow at 7PM so, if you're in town on a Thursday evening, please stop by for a song. Anyone who lives near Sydney is advised to stay there. I wish I was still there so I could take your class. Can you recommend any books on Irish folk songs I can read in lieu of commuting to NYC every Thursday (which would mean missing choir practice)? Or maybe we could entice you into coming to the Wash D.C. area to offer this course? |

Will put down the words for 'After Aughrim's Great Disaster' or 'Sean O'Dhuir a Gleanna' tomorrow. There is a great recording of it sung by The Voice Squad on Liam O'Flynn's CD, "Out to Another Side." It is a super song. You have fine taste. The classic useful collections of Irish folk song in the English language are Colm O Lochlainn's Irish Street Ballads and Sam Henry's Songs of the People. If you want a collection of "pub songs," then get Soodlum's Irish Ballad Book distributed by Oak Publications in the USA. There are books on singing style too but nothing beats listening to a lot of good singers. One thing I hope to do in my home in NYC is get some talented touring singers here for an afternoon of give and take with approximately 10 good local singers for the purpose of discussing singing style, repetoire, sources, etc. The per person charge would be 2 or 3 times the cost of a concert ticket but it would be a great way for local singers to get right into the topic. This is something that could be done in Washington or Pennsylvania or anywhere else. BSeed, I will tell you about Liam another time. It is a very funny story and likely worth the wait. I have numerous collections of songs, but what I'm looking for is a discussion of history, sytles, great performers - stuff I'd pick up if I'd been hanging out with folk singers all my life instead of scientists. |

The collection of singers is unbelievable, Paddy Tunney, Geordie Hanna & sister Sarah Anne O'Neill, Sarah & Rita Keane ( Aunts of Dolores), Siney Crotty. Tomas O Coisdealbha (Tom Phaidin Tom, as famed & respected in his home county of Conamara as Joe Heaney was abroad), Micheal O Suilleabhain, Liam Weldon, Elizabeth Cronin, Len Graham & plenty more. It dicusses their style of singing the tradition of the song (post Gaelic, national songs, street songs, etc). It also goes into inerpretation & a discussion on the songs that each contruibted. The only problem would be on how to get a hold of the book. Maybe some of the better informed Irish here could help. Good luck. Barry |

Narrative Singing in Ireland. Dublin, Irish Academic Press, 1993. Hugh Shields, a teacher at Trinity College in Dublin, is one the foremost Irish folk song collectors. You can probably get the book over the internet. |

Also depending on where you are you may find some singers that could offer some guidence.You might also want to research the regional & local styles, if Mick gets any info on that book I mentioned above it'll be of some help but nothing comes as close as being able to hear live a few singers singing in the different styles. This you may find at the many Irish festivals that would have sean nos workshops. If you're in Dan's area you might look into his workshop. The telephone number to register is 212-757-3318. A few Mudcatters have expressed an interest in participating in a Singers' Circle. I should tell you that the class is followed by an open-to-all Singers' Circle starting at 7PM; there are 28 enrolled in the class, so there will be plenty of good company. Anyone who lives near NYC or who may be in NYC on a Thursday night for business or pleasure between 21JAN and 11MAR is invited to stop by The Irish Arts Center to join us in song.
