alanabit in the UK

18 Feb 05 - 02:50 PM (#1414203)
Subject: alanabit in the UK
From: alanabit

I have decided to come over to the UK for a week to ten days in September. I am going to be doing a spot at Breezy's folk club on the weekend of 23/24 and will be looking for dates in the days either preceding or following that. I may even be able to come with my harmony trio, Alan's Abits. Markus and Thomas are nice men and fine singers and players.
I am interested in chances to showcase what I do. I play acoustic guitar and sing songs in different styles. There is always a fair bit of singalong and humour in my set. It is a long way from Germany, so I would like to be able to recover some of my expenses, but obviously, I do not expect to immediately pick up paid work at the level which I have done over here. The attraction is more to be able to do what I love and to sing in English to an audience which can understand everything I do. Unfortunatley, the only one of you to see me at work so far has been MC Fat, back last autumn. The gig went well, but he was probably baffled by some of it, as I was working in German!
I would be interested in showcasing at folk clubs, but by no means does it have to be a folk club. Anywhere where I have a reasonable chance of getting my music across is interesting for me (and the Abits). Please PM me or offer any information or advice you have to this thread. I am really looking forward to meeting some of you.

" Alan Moorhouse has been busking and gigging around central Europe for over twenty years now. We'll spare you the usual bragging and hype. He is a passable singer, an unexceptional lyricist and a mediocre guitarist. He is not universally popular and never will be. He does have a small and loyal audience and the ability to win over new ones quickly."

I love it!! This is snippet of a review on Alan's site. Unusual, eh?

I would love to be in the UK in September! I would surely seek this fellow out!

I do have to disagree with the above review in part. I love his voice, delight in his lyrics & believe him to be a bit more than a "mediocre guitarist". But I have no doubt as to the truth of the last sentence quoted above!

Alan, my jazz/blues club has monthly singer-songwriter sessions (not limited to blues/jazz). Contact at www.OneNightstandAcoustic.co.uk
If you're in the area (Ascot) try South Hil Park in Bracknell http://www.southhillpark.org.uk/index.jsp as well.

Alan, if you need a place to stay in London, we're happy to put you up... MudGuard can vouch that shiese meine Deutsche ist but if you don't mind cats, you're more than welcome.

We're convienient for Stratford station (direct bus link from Stanstead Airport), the London Underground tube system, access to the M25 London Orbital motorway (if you drive), City airport and some major London bus routes.

We might even arrange a traditional pub session - there's a 41st birthday to celebrate on the 14th.... I can wait a week or so!

I can indeed vouch for Alan's performance which in German the Koln audience really liked a lot of laughter was to be heard in his introductions to songs most of which are in English and there are some fine songs. Think that date might be close to Otley Folk Festival give them a bell Alan

Thanks everyone. I am going to be in touch with you all. Going in "cold" to most festival organisers, without an introduction, is more likely to put their backs up than to secure a gig. Whereas I have a bit of form in Germany, I can't really see myself getting taken seriously for festivals in the UK. Maybe one or two might give me a try out on an open stage though.
I have had another offer of a gig since I posted last night. That would be a village hall affair, which sounds like a lot of          fun. I am grateful for all suggestions.

I'd like to keep this thread up for a bit. I wonder if anyone can give me any advice about approaching art centres and the like?

Dunno about arts centers, Alan.
You might try this folk club directory though, and contact a number of clubs on the off chance of something going...

Hi Alan --

how about alanabit in the US? Any chance of that?

We'd love to see you here.

Cheers,
Michael

Michael, you can't imagine how much I'd love to come. If things continue to improve this year, a short trip to the New York/New England area might be in sight. I would really love to get out to the West Coast to meet people like yourself, Joe Offer and Amos - not to mention the estimable Seattle contingent - let alone khandu in Mississippi. That looks like it's a little bit further over the horizon though! It is three years since I even visited my own country. Now I had better get back to work on my translation so I can pay the rent next month!

Things are shaping up a little now. I am doing Don T's club in Maidstone on September 22, The RM Tavern in Eastney on Fri, Sept 23, The Village Hall in Silsoe on Saturday 24 and Breezy's club at St.Albans on Sunday 25. Markus is certainly going to be with me and we are hoping to have our guitarist/most other strings instrumentalist, Thomas with us. He is the really talented one, so we are keeping our fingers crossed!
We are not sure yet whether we will go West or North after meeting Breezy and George at St.Albans. I would like to hear from anyoone with any bright ideas though. Boy am I looking forward to September!

Let me know if you can make it 'oop north' Alan. Unfortunately still 'unemployed' otherwise I'd have sorted a gig for you.

I'll let you know if anything comes up in the North, Jim. I am still contacting people and considering options. Hope you are in good health and spirits.

My apologies if you have seen all this before, but I wanted to send out a reminder to all those who might be interested in my forthcoming gigs in the UK. This time, I will not be attempting to drive into London. We have no gigs there or anywhere north of Hertfordshire. We hope to correct this on a subsequent visit. I do not know London well enough to drive safely there and I would only be a danger to myself (and other drivers). I must drive, as I am bringing a PA.
The nearest gigs to London are at St.Albans on the 25th of September and in Silsoe, on the previous evening. Some of you come from the Pompey area, so you might be able to make it to the RMA Tavern gig in Eastney on Friday, 23rd.
We will be playing in Maidstone on September, 26th, probably at The Pilot. That has to be confirmed though. Please check my website, www.alan.free-pop.com , or the man himself, Don T, if you are interested.
I will be playing with Markus Apitius, who produced both of my albums Small Voice Crying and Travellers' Tales. He sings like an angel (which no one has ever accused me of doing!) and plays guitar, bass and piano well. It should be a fun evening.
We will not leave Germany until September 15, so there is time to get back to me, if you have any questions. I can say that there will be a private gig in Cornwall on Saturday, September 17. You will need to contact me personally if you have not yet been invited, but you want to come.
I hope very much that some of you can come along. Bring a friend if you can. It is a long way to come just to sing to myself!
Schedule:
September 16-September 22 - Cornwall, tba
September 17 – Private gig near Callington
September 18 - St Teresa's Cheshire Home Long Rock Penzance Cornwall TR20 9BJ Tel: (01736 710336)

ALAN & MARKUS are confirmed for Monday 26th September.

The venue is THE PILOT, Upper Stone Street, Maidstone, Kent

They will be doing a 45 minute Showcase at this club night, and all are welcome to join us.

This is a temporary venue, till we sort out our problems, and is in a side room off the bar area. The space is limited, so come early.

Anyone wishing to perform, please let me know, so I can plan the evening.

As this is technically a bar area, admission is free, but we will pass a hat round, or run a raffle.

Hope to see some of you there.
Don T.

Hi Steve. Great to hear from you. We are having some problems getting the formats sorted out for the printers of the new album, but I should be able to get a copy out to you in about four weeks time. We are having to make up a special package for this UK jaunt!

Alanabit - if you want to come to London some time in the future, and I'm free, I'm happy to drive you and your PA around. It's not so bad driving here now, just so long as you don't expect courtesy, manners or right of way!

Alan

I'd have loved to fit you in at Blackmore or Hertford, but the dates didn't fit! Nonetheless, I will hope to catch you at St Albans. On the basis of the CD you sent me a couple of years ago, it should be well worth the investment in a few litres of overpriced petrol!

Thanks Alan, I am very flattered. I look forward to hearing a story or two over a pint. It is shaping up to be a fun evening.
Liz: That is very kind of you - and I may well take you up. There is no point in my trying to drive in London. If I see a sign saying "West Park" or "Bromley" or "Highgate", I really do not have a clue which direction it will lead me. As you know, people like that should not attempt to drive in London! I can't wait to get over though. Is there any chance of you making the St.Albans gig?

Excuse me reviving this thread, but the great adventure begins later today. We will load up the car, drive through the night and hopefully arrive in Cornwall tomorrow morning. Any Mudcatter who wants to get in touch can either e-mail me through my website or PM me through Mudcat (when it's up!) Markus and I will be in Cornwall for a week and then Portsmouth, Silsoe, St. Albans and then Maidstone. We would love to meet some of you.
