25 Feb 05 - 03:12 PM (#1420953) Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival From: GUEST,Pete Glad to see Blyth Power are still going strong and it's good to see a folk festival have the guts to put them on. Joseph Porter must be one of the best songwriters around. |
25 Feb 05 - 07:20 PM (#1421128) Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival From: Les from Hull I'm sorry to hear about a carpet in Stamps, Ray. Can't they keep these singaround rooms properly unfurnished, so there's nowt soaking up us voices 'cept peoples' ears? To others Holmfirth is dead good. If you're in range you should go there. |
26 Feb 05 - 06:55 PM (#1421839) Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival From: GUEST,padgett (at home) Need to keep this thread alive I dont know if you are aware that this festival has been one of my favourites for many years Many people go for the fringe events and when the weather is good it can be great. However no one can gaurantee the weather! Nothing stays the same, even the Nook is different but very popular. We lost the Elephant, but regained the Stamps ~ new management ironing out camping much better last year, but it really rained stair rods last year (take yr wellies)The White Hart should be used more assuming we've still got! Lovely place Holmfirth and geared up for tourism, go see the places you see on TV!! Traditional singers are made most welcome and I met Roger Hinchliffe last year who is son of Frank Hinchliffe trad singer from Sheffield Also the last place I saw Sid Long compering [god bless you all] Ray Padgett |
26 Feb 05 - 07:11 PM (#1421854) Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival From: Mary Humphreys Where is the Stamps Ray? Direct me either from the Nook or the Civic Hall, both landmarks I know. Must turn up for a song or two - schedule permitting. See you there. Mary |
27 Feb 05 - 02:43 AM (#1422085) Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival From: GUEST,padgett (at home) The pub directly across the road from the Civic is the Stamps, if you go down the street at the side of the pub and come back into the pub via the yard the Stamps is the downstairs room of the Postcard. It use to be excellent for singing as it had/has a stone floor, unfortunatley this has now been carpeted. My recollection of last year, late on is that it is still very good for singing!!! Mary I still remember last year in the Old Bridge moved me to tears You're at Barnsley club shortly aren't you (keep thread going) Ray Padgett |
28 Feb 05 - 10:15 AM (#1422880) Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival From: GUEST,nikki Sorry but for reasons beyond our control the singarounds will not be in Stamps after all. Most of the time they will probably be timetabled for the White Hart (which unlike last year has some real ale on now). |
28 Feb 05 - 11:03 AM (#1422930) Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival From: GUEST,Raggytash A decent venue as well, last years Saturday was a "good do", as is said |

And shock, horror, it will only be my second visit there, but I doubt it will be any less eventfull! Anyone else remember Graeme Knights falling asleep under the pool table (I forget which pub!), after being on an all day drinking session with Vin Rafter (and my Mum shockingly enough!)??? muppitz x |

23 Mar 05 - 04:03 PM (#1441883) Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival From: GUEST,padgett (at home) Raggytash the 'ell the Rescue Boat? Muppitz, the pub was the Elephant and Castle, the then landlord all 9 st wet through of him Roger, would man handle the pool table into the corner of the room and put a board over it. Graeme Knights dismantled his wheel chair and put it under the table Graeme then sung a song and promptly slide under the pool table fast asleep. I as compere as usual!! Had an Email from Graeme to say he is launching his new CD May 24th ? at Doncaster folk club (more at Barnsley singaround He is now resident at the famous Herga Folk club and semi pro singer |

22 Apr 05 - 12:21 PM (#1468078) Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival From: LesB Never been to Holmfirth but I am thinking about going. What is the layout of the place? are venues close together or spaced out, how far is the camp site? is it walking distance? All these sort of things I could do with knowing. Oh! and will it rain? :) Cheers Les |
22 Apr 05 - 02:05 PM (#1468154) Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival From: GUEST,Nikki Holmfirth venues very close, 200 yds max. from one place to another. Holmfirth is a small town in a valley. (You may have seen it on the telly!! Can't guarantee any 'Summer Wine' stars but some of their keenest fans will be in town looking for Nora Battye's house..) 2 free buses run from the campsite to the town until the last gig finishes. Service is at regular intervals at peak times and on demand off peak. Rain unlikely but the campsite and its entrance is flat, which is pretty good for the Pennines. The main evening events are posted on the website but there are loads of other things going on. Programmes now available £2. www.holmfirthfestival.com |
22 Apr 05 - 02:11 PM (#1468157) Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival From: GUEST,Nikki Holmfirth Children's Festival info. now available on the website. Lots to do and see for children of all ages. Shooting roots now established as THE Youth Project at festivals has been running for 10 years and we are pleased to invite them to Holmfirth this year. |

05 May 05 - 09:04 AM (#1478690) Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival From: Nick What sort of times are singarounds on over the weekend? We were thinking of coming Saturday or Sunday (probably pm). Is it just the White Hart? Is it an anything goes singaround or is it a particular style goes? Does it tend to be very very busy and are averge singers accepted? |
