I'm glad it happened happily. A few years ago I called an employer of mine in Oklahoma (I was free lancing) and her voice sounded so strange I knew something was wrong. It's a longish story but suffice to say I called the Tulsa police and they discovered her on the floor having suffered a stroke. It is better to err on the side of caution.

Are you speaking to me, GUEST? Read the thread yourself. Do you know that the people in this discussion are from all over the world, and that to ask for news of a resolution means that I want to see this message from someone I know to be in the Northest who I know can have contacted Mike who is also in the Northwest? Do you know that this Mudcatter discovered many other Mudcatters on a thread that had been started about my Dad, a folksinger they all knew, so I feel a special affinity for their welfare? Do you have a reason for being impatient or snotty, guest? Who are you, guest, that you should even write to this thread?

Rant over. I'm glad to hear that Mike is okay. Just don't do it again, Mike! :)

the emergency was just circumstantial..
and luckily the perceived situation
was not an actual crisis.
mike is fine, and was mainly
having computer problems
which made it appear as if he was
not responding. several of us
took it to mean he COULD not
respond due to medical condition,
since he had been saying he
did not feel quite right.
alls well that ends well.
thank you clones for moving this down..
funny , though when i saw the coast guard emergency
thread right next to this one i thought the sytem
was responding to mike sending in the coast guard@Q!

I think there were 911 calls from several states. It is better to be safe than sorry always. He'll probably get a ribbing at work but oh well...they'll be impressed by how popular he is. One thing I know is to have a cell phone..I turned mine in but I should rethink..we couldn't coordinate anything without cell phones since computer tied up the main phone. mg

well some folks who have DSL, cable or seperate lines for computer
have other options for communications...and as WYSIWYG suggested
the emergency operator is able to break into a busy line to make
a call.

From: JohnInKansas

A note on operator breakin:

We don't have DSL but do have a separate line for the e-hookups. For quite a long time we didn't have a monitor phone on the 2d line, so an operator could break in and break the connection to the computers, but there was no phone to ring if they tried to wake someone up.

You'd have the same situation if for example you unplug the phone in a motel/hotel to plug your laptop in. Many "road-warriers" carry - or used to before DSL became common in hotels -a "jack doubler" so they can plug both the phone and the laptop/modem into a single jack just for that reason.

While the monitor phone that I plugged in is mainly just for checking whether it's the line or the ISP, it probably is a good idea for emergency callback, and seems okay now that the no-call list seems to be working.

Well I wish I'd had a manager who cared as much as these (almost) strangers do. I fainted at work and he said I was doing it to get attention and refused to call anyone for me..... turned out I had a heart condition and could have had a stroke... he wouldn't know about that.. he doesn't have a heart!

OpenMike, I hope you gave yourself a big pile of celestial brownie points for that concern. Having seen the remarks from some people here, it makes me wonder why anyone bothers to help anyone else. Glad there are still folks who do.

Actually, that ISN'T what I suggested, but I wish I had. I suggested the cops could knock on his door as a wellbeing check. I would not have thought an operator could get anyone's attention if the computer were tying up the phone line, or if he was on the floor in a coma. Maybe they can, but I was thinking face to face.

Anyway, whatever! Glad he's OK and glad y'all cared. I DO wish a Clone would edit a prominent all-clear into the first post....

This concern and quick action is yet another example of Mudcat at its best! I think you should all be very pleased with yourselves - and I'm glad everything turned out OK.

By the way, the emergency number in Oz is 000 - not that I am expecting to have an emergency or anything. I feel fine. But it's probably worth knowing the numbers in the different countries. What is the emergency number in the UK?
