Tech: recording from minidisc to PC

Help please? My daughter is wanting to download some tracks on a minidisc (Logic fun I think) onto the PC and gradually build up the tracks into 1. The sony MD player doesn't seem to be able to download onto sonic stage as it has come from another computer programme and appears to be pre programmed so as not to copy cDs or MDs. ANy thoughts please? It's for her music GSCE.
THanks
Alex

I used to just run it into the line in of the computer and use a sound recorder to record it realtime. Also, some MD players have an optical out, and some soundcards have an optical in. This is ideal, but a bit complicated. Unless you can do optical or the MD has USB or firewire, you'll have to do it this way:

Get a wire from radio shack that is 1/8inch stereo on both sides. Plug one end into the phones out of the MD and the other end into the line in of the audio card. Run SoundForge, Cooledit, or Sound Recorder (start menu/programs/accessories/entertainment). Hit record on the computer and play on the MD. When the MD is done, you'll have one great big wav file. Most MP3 software can convert it from there. Good luck.

There have been earlier threads on this. You can't load /transfer the tracks onto a PC in the usual sense because the MDR doesn't use file formats. But what you can do is play them into the PC using a lead from the sound out on the MDR to the sound in on the PC and some competent recording software. It takes a little longer but it works perfectly well.

To review the history on MDR in past discussions put the word "minidisc" into the "Filter" box and set the time limit to "All".

The filter box is roughly in the middle of the upper quarter of the forum home page (see link just under each post).

Thanks folks
I first tried to be too particular in the search, hence the post, I've found it now.
Many thanks

I had problems too, but discovered that you have to unlock the disc, otherwise nothing happens. DOH!

A recent thread, which went quickly off the bottom of the page: Born Again Napster? has a link to "PC Magazine: New Napster."

The actual title of the linked article is " Users Bypass Copy Protection on Portable Napster." The article notes several programs available to let you "break the copy protection" on their rented music files to record them as .wav on your computer, but the interesting part is the brief discussion of "you don't need the programs."

The "New Napster" uses a different format than other music download services, but the comments probably are applicable to most such services. The other link at the same post gives a few more details. The Napster system is fairly new, and requires specific hardware, so probably hasn't seen much use by our folk.

Probably not directly applicable here, but might be interesting as "Related Info" to a few.
