22 Feb 05 - 02:25 PM (#1417713) Subject: Tune Req: Hi lee hi lo From: GUEST,leeneia I'm looking for a pretty tune that my husband's grandfather (born about 1895) used to play on his harmonica. He called it "Hi lee Hi lo" (Of course, they are many possible variations on the spelling of that. For example, it could have been "hi li hi low") It is definitely not the 1950's song "Hi lili hi lo." If anybody knows this old song and could post a MIDI or ABC, I would appreciate it. |

I *think* (no promises now) that it went: Hi lee hi low, watch the little doagies all day Hi lee hi low, watch the little fellers at play. |

25 Feb 05 - 02:59 PM (#1420943) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Hi lee hi lo From: Uncle_DaveO Does the tune at least begin like the German drinking song, In Muenchen Steht ein Hofbrauhaus? I remember a Hi lee, hi lo song that started out that way, out of the dim, dead past beyond rememb'ring. The "hi lee" occupies the notes of "In Muen-", and "hi lo" is to the notes of "-chen Steht". That's as much as I can dredge out of memory. Dave Oesterreich |

12 Feb 13 - 11:46 AM (#3478674) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Hi lee hi lo From: GUEST,leeneia Guten Tag, Tony. The true name of the song means "In the Forest and on the Heath." The words originate with Wilhelm Bornemann, 1816. The melody is ascribed to F. L. Gehricke, who is said to have modified an old folk melody in 1827. There's a lot in the lyrics I don't understand, but it seems to be a jocular song about a hunter. 1. I started looking for this song because when my husband's grandfather played it, it was pretty and lilting. We don't have to play it crudely, the way it sounds on the wax recording. |

14 Feb 13 - 05:55 AM (#3479452) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Hi lee hi lo From: GUEST,Grishka Tony, the lyrics you mention are clearly to be heard in George T Watson's version of "Im Wald und auf der Heide" (see Mick's link above) - a nice sample of international folk comedy. The third line might be "Bei uns geht's immer noch so" - "Where we live, it still goes like that." |
14 Feb 13 - 09:38 AM (#3479537) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Hi lee hi lo From: Mick Pearce (MCP) I started a transcription of the English section and discovered that a virtually identical version had already been transcribed by Jim Dixon from another cylinder at the Cylinder Preservation and Digitization project: George P Watson - Sauerkraut is bully. Jim's version is here: Sauerkraut; the cylinder starts with Sauerkraut, then as Jim says in that post: "[Here the recording seems to segue into a different song, although the web site doesn't say anything about it:]. The different song is the same as the English part of Hi Le Hi Lo that I linked above. (Interestingly, Jim's link to the cylinder leads to a page that says it isn't digitized, so I don't know if that's changed since Jim looked at it!). There's also a version in another thread, in a collected version from GEST: Lyr Req: Rock All Our Babies to Sleep (J Rodgers). My transcription of the English from the cylinder is below. The German starts off with almost identically to the same (half) verse as leeneia's above: Im Wald und auf der Heide da such ich meine Freude, (pronounced Freide) ich bin ein Jägersmann, Ja, ich bin ein Jägersmann! The chorus I found in this book The Brownies and Prince Florimel, by Palmer Cox at Project Gutenberg as: Halli, hallo, halli, hallo; Bei uns geht's immer, Je langer je schlimmer; Halli, hallo, halli, hallo, Bei uns geht's immer noch so! (The cylinder has it as Hi-le-hi-lo) There is one more verse (at about 1min in) but I'll leave that to someone with good German to transcribe! Mick HI LE HI LO English section Now show me that girl what never will have a dear little baby boy. A very good child what never will cry und make a man blessed und glad. Some people seek pleasures away from their homes While I by the fire do keep Och, the fire burns bright, I could sit here all night While rocking those babies to sleep. Chorus (yodeled): Oh-ee-oh lay-ee ay-ee ay-ee-dee dee Oh-ee-oh lay-ee-dee dee Oh-ee-oh lay-ee-dee dee Lay-ee ay-ee ay-ee-dee dee Mama will come home in the sweet by and by. Now I'm just thirty-five und my dear little wife Is just ten years younger than me. She's full of enjoyment and plenty of fun, And ofttimes goes out for a spree She leaves me behind those babes to mind, The house in good order to keep. By the way she does roam far away from her home While I rock those babies to sleep. Chorus (yodeled): Oh-ee-oh lay-ee ay-ee ay-ee-dee dee Oh-ee-oh lay-ee-dee dee Oh-ee-oh lay-ee-dee dee Lay-ee ay-ee ay-ee-dee dee Mama will come home in the sweet by and by. One night when I got those babies to sleep I took a short walk down the street. Und there to my surprise I saw 'fore my eyes My wife with a policeman, ?six feet? At first I got wild, I fooled? her and smiled Then I've been taking a peek, They've been huggling und kissling all in their while While I rocked those babies to sleep Chorus (yodeled): Oh-ee-oh lay-ee ay-ee ay-ee-dee dee Oh-ee-oh lay-ee-dee dee Oh-ee-oh lay-ee-dee dee Lay-ee ay-ee ay-ee-dee dee Mama will come home whenever she pleases. 05 May 13 - 11:58 AM (#3511831) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Hi lee hi lo From: GUEST,Gary Linden I have from my great-grandparents a 78rpm record of "Hi Le Hi Lo" that sounds identical to the song from the Cylinder Preservation ... Project. Thank you, Mick Pearce, for the second verse. I can now make it out better. What I came up with is: Den Wald und Forst zu hegen Das Wildbret zu erlegen, Das ist was mir gefällt. Ja, das ist was mir gefällt. (Enjoying/caring for the woods and forest, shooting the wild game, that's what appeals to me.) This song appears to be a somewhat comic variation of the (probably) older song "Im Wald und auf der Heide" by Bornemann, also mentioned on this thread. (Actually a poem in latin that he translated into german, VERY well done, and likely much older than 1816.) That song is very nice and has several good renditions on YouTube. The Watson version seems to have been very popular during the Depression, probably because of the line "Bei uns geht's immer je länger, je schlimmer." (With us, the longer it goes the worse it gets.) I hope this is useful. |
