01 Mar 05 - 01:37 PM (#1424055) Subject: RE: I need financial advice From: wysiwyg I hope you will be very cautious about any advice you get online. The advice can only be as good as the info you supply, minus whatever experience the "helper" does or does not have. Perhaps the best help here might be that someone could help you discern the right questions to ask someone in person, the right areas to consider. Please, double-check any plans with someone local, face to face, before implementing them. Good luck! ~Susan |

01 Mar 05 - 02:09 PM (#1424098) Subject: RE: I need financial advice From: Richard Bridge You will find many solicitors offer an initial half-hour interview free. You may receive more expertise if you can find an insolvency practitioner who will do so. They however may be more reluctant to do anything free. |

04 Mar 05 - 03:54 PM (#1426825) Subject: RE: I need financial advice From: the lemonade lady You're all so kind. This morning I was all for selling my house, investing the money and renting using the interest. Then my solicitor says I can pay her off in installments so things may be looking up. The nightmare isn't over yet by any means. Thanks for your concern. 8-) Sal |
04 Mar 05 - 06:03 PM (#1426913) Subject: RE: I need financial advice From: Richard Bridge I hate to rat on another solicitor, but did your solicitor advise you about the possibility of your getting legal aid? If not you may be able to slip your solicitor's bill altogether. It is a solicitor's professional duty so to do. Have you had proper advice about possibly going bankrupt - there are restrictions on taking houses to some extent - and so screwing your creditors? Are you of an age where you might be able to do a house income plan, if you own your house free of mortgage? It is NOT my area of expertise but unless there is a house price collapse, selling your house to pay debts and then using investment income to rent sounds like a bit of a high-risk plan. If you threaten your creditors with going bankrupt, they might take a second charge on your house so they would be paid out if you moved or died... |

04 Mar 05 - 10:50 PM (#1427055) Subject: RE: I need financial advice From: semi-submersible We all know this, but sometimes we forget: eating lower on the food chain cuts the grocery bill wonderfully, even if it's just some days of the week. (Good for the planet, too.) I'm a great beliver in oats (I don't usually cook 'em) with fruit or juice if not milk. With a second-hand breadmaker and whole-grain flour by the sack, we've cut down shopping trips too. A car is a hugely expensive thing to keep, at least in North America. AtoB in the UK has tips for easing into alternatives where possible. If winter heating is expensive, shut it all down and use one insulated room. Incandescent bulbs are highly efficient heaters. Little things, but they can help to stop the leaks. Good luck. Stay in touch. |
05 Mar 05 - 04:37 AM (#1427173) Subject: RE: I need financial advice From: Richard Bridge I do have to agree about food (and drink). You can make (I sometimes do make) a week's worth of veg stew (and it is very tasty) for under a couple of quid. |
