Lyr Req: 'Young Royal cut down in his prime'

The following comes from a novel about the Royal Marines in Cyprus in 1956. It's clearly from a specialized version of "The Sailor / Trooper Cut Down in His Prime." Has anyone ever heard this RM version ? Can anyone complete the song from tradition ?

So beat the drum slowly and play the pipes mournfully,
We'll sing the Dead March as we carry him along.
We'll stand by his graveside, fire three volleys o'er him,
He was a young Royal cut down in his prime.

ISTR that Lloyd or MacColl once wrote that this was the "anthem" of the RM in WW II, but this fragment of it is all I've ever seen.

I've heard this chorus before but the verses were the same as "A Sailor Cut Down in His Prime".
Would suspect that the song was metamorphosed in the way that the the same song became "The Streets of Laredo".

Thanks, Colyn. One assumes that the verses are roughly the same, but there are differing versions of "Sailor." Can you post the precise verses to the RM version you heard ?

Sorry, Lighter, cannot help with verses.
Try earlier threads about "Streets of Laredo" or ".... wrapped up in white linen" or try the DT database.
Colyn.

No references there to "Young Royal." Relationship is obvious, but detail is needed.
