From what I understand any crossroads were a suitable site to go at Midnight, practice any craft that you wanted to master, usually a musical instrument, cards or dice. All one had to do was to wait for a tall stranger to appear, take whatever it was you were trying to master and use it, e.g. play your guitar hand it back to you and you would then be a master of it. There seems to be some difference of opinion on who the stranger was, we have been led to believe it was the devil, but not all practitioners of the ritual believed this to be the case. For what it's worth, I've heard that the crossroads made famous by the Robert Johnson legend are the intersection Hwy. 59 (?) and Hwy. 61. Apparently Bob Dylan heard the same. You might try the Robert Johnson Notebooks @ xroads.virginia.edu/~MUSIC/BLUES/rjhome3.html or blues.miningco.com/ I believe that this sight has a lot of links that might help you find more, or even the picture that you are looking for. |
