Hy Scooby I have to admit Ive barely had a drink since New Year!!
Honest with all the things going on.

I have had a quiet year so far, but hope to get to Wath, Holmfirth and wherever I can bareing in mind my home responsibilities.

Enjoyed Banbury and the Catters gathering was probably the best singaround. Now an annual event i believe. Hope to get there.

Ive done a few Yorkshire traditional song workshops (at Cleckheaton, Sheffield and Saddleworth FFs) and Anston FC as well as recorded a Yorkshire song CD. Just had a phone call asking if I want to record next few days but i'm just recovering from a heavy cold!
All the best to all the Catters and hope to put more faces to names, I get confused easily

Good to hear that the dynamic duo (Booker and Padgett) are now back on form now.

Yes, it'll be a great weekend if past years are anything to go by.

And it should be even better now that the barnsley club's a no-smoking zone!

(Went to their club night with Donal O'Connor recently, an excellent evening's entertainment and it was so good to be able to breathe freely up in that club room again.)

I need to put the record straight re smoking:
I personally am for a no smoking ban. I know that there are a number of smokers who come regularly to the festival. I will be asking smokers to have one down stairs if at all possible; I am unable to impose a blanket ban at the FF. This point has already been discussed on the phone.

Th club room is poorly ventilated and has one window which opens (from the bottom and is usually secured at the top by a beer mat) to be seen to be believed lol

The pub is a smoker, I cannot IMPOSE a no smoking ban this point was raised at the FC on Monday, we at the FC continue to have a NO SMOKING policy. The FF attendees I would like to think will agree that this policy should be extended to the festival

The YM does have a no smoking policy (alarms in place) and smokers usually stand just outside to have a smoke.

Any comments are invited, but only from smokers as to a practical way around this problem!!

Ray Padgett, festival director {the buck stops here}

See you Jimmy!!

Any news of the Kenneth!!

Hi Ray

About the smoking bit surely as the club are running the weekend and upstairs is a 'private' function room you can designate it as non-smoking? I'll be coming for the weekend anyway but I do know of 'others' who now won't go to anywhere with smoking.

Anyhow looking forward to the weekend, always plenty of singing at Barnsley weekend.

and the markets are good

Dont go with the idea of blanket bans it ends up with everyone missing out.I know "others" who will not go anywere with a full smoking ban.

Sorry there is no easy answer with the eternal smoking/no smoking argument. It has been explained that there is bad ventilation in the club room.I sing in a band that has non smokers as members. As most of our work is done in pubs we try and control the problem by taking a large portable fan to all our gigs and blow the smoke away from us.Maybe you could use this idea coupled with letting smokers sit in the rear of the room?
.
I run and attend regular sessions and there is no ban on smoking , this would be very difficult as they are held in pubs.Cottingham Folk club is no smoking so I do not go.

I shall be coming to Barnsley Festival(for the first time) I smoke as do the people who are coming with me, but as there is a ban in the club we will respect that and smoke elsewere. If it was a complete ban I would be going somewere else for the weekend.

HY Carol
I would dearly like to say that the FF upstairs room is a no smoker.

However there are a number of FF regulars who are habitual smokers. I believe that they are coming round to the change in the 'norm' and I as I have stated, will be asking them not to smoke in the club room!

There are still many clubs which do not have such a ban. I would like the law changed to prohibit smoking in public houses to come in as in Ireland asap and if our experience and the excellent work pioneered by Pete Swift (No Smoke Folk)in FCs as a result of Roy Castles' untimely death leads to greater folkie longevity then all to the good.

Education education education I cannot impose this ban this year without the agreement of all concerned.
thanks to everyone for raising this is and general concern.

Next year's festival will be a non smoker upstairs, or i wont be festival director!

The pub downstairs permits smoking, so if you want to smoke but come why not stay downstairs!

Oh my Gawd smoking no smoking. This ban will come in totally withing the next five years, in the meantime why oh why are our knickers getting in a twist. Pubs are and always hav been associated with smoking some of my bestest friends smoke and i as a non smoker respect their right to do so even tho i don't have a go at the weed. I think some things are over the top. Recently i witnessed a non smoker closing the door (after the landlord had opened it) between the non smoking room where the session was to the rest of the pub saying the 'smoke came through' first of all this was bollocks secondly the landlord (who actually owns the pub)had the right to do what he wanted. Get a grip it's not nuclear war. Padge has done what he can it's not enforcible yet let's try and be accomidating to all
