And give some points to "Put it On the Ground," also in the DT database. The latter was one of my favorites from a mis-spent youth on the streets of Queens, NY. |

Down the road came Eddie Baker In his rattling old boneshaker and he never know the trail he left behind him It's a bloody lot of typing so if you want the words you'd better grovel. Bill |
04 Dec 98 - 11:29 PM (#48060) Subject: RE: Champion dung spreader From: Art Thieme Just an aside---- Back in the 60s, the main symbl for the Old Town Folklore Center in Chicago (the retail store for the Old Town School Of Folk Music) was a round mechanical part for some sort of device with spikes all around it. It did look something like a kid's drawing of the sun with rays emanating from it. In actuality, it was a PICK WHEEL FROM A MANURE SPREADER! What better item to be the logo for an institution spreading songs via the oral tradition---ie. folk music. Back then we ABSOLUTELY KNEW that traditional songs, ie. ones in the oral tradition, were the ONLY real folksongs! All else was "fake music". (Boy, I do enjoy raising this red herring every 6 months or so!!! It'll never be settled, but it's sure fun to lurk and watch the gory fight.) Art (for those who know the truth...) |

By going digital....perhaps we have dis-honored and dis-graced our origins.

The creator of "immortalia" now resides in your backyard, Fresno.
Heaven forbid (SINCERELY) that the floodgates of mudcat ever should open and permit a gusher of kat-squash.
However, he (JohN) selective-harvested some of the current living legends of American Oral ribald-songs. You, Dick, and a dozen of my friends.
Perhaps, an "invitation only" area ... might bring in a midi from Vectis.

18 Jul 11 - 09:42 PM (#3190406) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Champion Dung Spreader From: GUEST Champion Dung Spreader, The (Adge Cutler) Champion Dung Spreader was Adge's answer to Lonnie Donegan's 1960 UK hit My Old Man's A Dustman and describes his old dad's occupation spreading dung far and wide with a "girt big blackthorn stick". The song was originally recorded on 2nd November 1966 at the Royal Oak in Nailsea, and inclused on Adge Cutler & The Wurzels' first album. It was also the a-side of the band's follow-up single to Drink Up Thy Zider, but didn't chart. 45 rpm single (a-side); LP: Adge Cutler & The Wurzels, LP: The Very Best Of Adge Cutler, LP: Adge Cutler's Cider Drinking Favourites, LP: Mendip Magic; CD: The Wurzels and Adge Cutler & The Wurzels; CD: The Finest 'Arvest of The Wurzels featuring Adge Cutler (2000); CD: The Finest 'Arvest of The Wurzels featuring Adge Cutler (2001); CD: The Wurzels Live; video: The Wurzels Live; CD: Top Of The Crops |

21 Jul 11 - 05:46 PM (#3192230) Subject: Lyr Add: CHAMPION DUNG SPREADER (Adge Cutler) From: Jim Dixon Here's how the Wurzels perform the song in a live video at YouTube. I have boldfaced the words that are different from those that Vectis posted. Note the sequence of verses is also different. CHAMPION DUNG SPREADER Words and music by Adge Cutler As sung by The Wurzels 1. Now, some folks like to boast about their father's occupation, Dustmen and the likes and other situations. Not so our old man. Workin' was his pride, With his hobnail boots and gaiters and his dung-fork at his side. CHORUS CHORUS: Hi-ho, fiddle-iddle-o, Chesterfield and Cheddar. Hi-ho, the folks all know he's the champion dung-spreader. 2. Now many years ago when Dad was in his power, With a mighty two-hand swipe he hit the old church tower. "Lord help us!" cried the vicar. "'Tis the kingdom come!" "Not so," said the verger. "'Tis a hundredweight of dung." CHORUS 3. Now his aim is straight and true, and when his arms start flailin', We'd all duck out o' the way when them big brown lumps go sailin'. Just leave our old man where the dung lies piled up thick, And he'll make it fly for miles with his girt big blackthorn stick. CHORUS 4. Now as you all can see, Pa was quite contented. He had the finest job since work it was invented, And when our old man laid him down to die, He'd a forty-acre field with the dung piled six-foot high. CHORUS TWICE |
