BS: Why is chat so screwed up?

Anyone know? Get booted all the damned time. Is there a reason that anyone knows of?

Hi Brucie - wondered what had happened to you last night - thought it was something we said.

The 'cat seems to be rather fragile at the moment. I haven't had problems with the chat but have had getting into the 'cat. Could all be tied up.

I have had similar problems brucie especially when it gets over 15 in the room. Twice I found myself posting and getting no responses. I was in but not receiving. When I exited and re-entered, I was told that my posts were appearing but I was not on the "In" list. Story of my life.

That happens frequently Sins... sometimes when the room is crowded, but also when it's not...

So it's not just you

FUBAR

Booted seven times in 40 minutes from either chat or the main MNudcat site. Think there might be something wrong.

Well, you can't blame it on Mecury Retrograde.

For those who aren't hip to astrology, Mecury Retrograde is a time when the planet Mercury appears to be moving backwards. During those times communication systems, and communication itself has been known to act strange and actually break down..

The reason why Mercury Retrograde can't be blamed for the recent Mudcat communications breakdowns is because Mercury is still Direct until Sunday March 19th..

But maybe communication starts to breakdown during pre-Mercury Retrograde periods..

It'll be interesting to see if the functioning of Mudcat communication systems- including the chat rooms-stabilize or improve during this upcoming Mercury Retrograde period which lasts until Wednesday, April 13th. [sorry, but I doubt it, though it would be great if it did.]

Also, it might be an interesting project for those 'Catters into research to chart the number of communication beakdowns during other Mecury Retrograde times and during the week or two before these predictable periodic astrological occurances and compare them with tims when Mercury is Direct and not getting ready to appear to move backwards.

I'm serious-by the way.

But I would imagine that such a research study seriously done and done correctly would be beyond the means of volunteers, even if those volunteers were skilled in such research as I certainly am not.

Not that any of us [even me, an astrology believer to my core] has the time, energy, and interest to spend on such a project..

just my 6 cents [since inflation has surely at least tripled the 2 cents worth of sharing that goes on here and elsewhere]

I'm having the same trouble Brucie, and often when I get booted and try to get back in I find I can't get into Mudcat at all, sometimes for a short time but at others for ages. These days I often just give up, and I'm not actually bothering with the chat nearly as much as I used to...it's too frustrating. I don't think it's much to do with how many are in teh room...yesterday lunch time there were three of us. We'd all only been in a matter of minutes and the whole site crashed.

It occurred to me that I should provide a link to an online article about Mercury retrograde.

And so I came back to the computer-and it froze on me, and then when I finally could do a search and link to one of 11,700 online articles about Mercury Retrograde, I find that I can't get into Mudcat's front door..

Well at least the back door is working for me-at this moment. Sometimes that doesn't work either...

Anyway, for those curious enough to read up on Mercury Retrograde, here is an excerpt from one website that I arbitrarily selected...

"Three times each year, for a three week time period, the planet Mercury goes retrograde. (This means from the perspective of the Earth, Mercury looks to be moving backward in the zodiac). What can we experience during Mercury retrogrades? – most often, increased frustration, interruptions and snafu's that make even simple projects seem impossible You will need more caution, more care, and a pinch more of elbow grease to get things done. Typically there are delays, interferences, miscommunications (especially for those of us with strong Virgo or Gemini in our charts (Mercury is the ruler of these two signs). It is not a good time to launch or initiate new projects. You will be pushing off, symbolically, just when the tide is going out, and it will be more of a strain to make headway with your plan – better to wait until the current is moving with you."

end of quote.

As an aside, this passage mentions the strong effect of Mercury Retrograde on those individuals who have strong Virgo and Gemini in their natal [birth] charts..I'm one of those people..

Here's a link to that article:
Mercury Retrograde

Included in this article is a table of Mercury Retrograde periods through the year 2006.

Of course, software issues including spyware and/or volume of chatting 'Catters could also be the cause of the problems Mudcat is experiencing, or these could be contributing factors along with good ole Mercury Retrograde-pre and actual.

"There must be a reason why..I don't know".

{and I bet some of you here know the song that this line comes from}

;O)

Well FWIW, I simply do not trust chats like Mudchat which as far as I can make out was running on the www server. We have a web server working hard and IMO never completely stable so we add to its tasks delivering pages every second or so to however many users are in the chat - lets say 20 people and a refresh of 2 seconds - we have added 720 page requests per minute to the already struggling server. On top of that, every server variable (who is who and so many lines of what has been said) in the web server space.

I think if I had to run one like that (and they do have compatibility advantages over something like the java folk chat) and had to do it on the same machine and had control enough to do it, I think I'd have a seperate instance of the server running on a different port (eg www.mudcat.org/chat.cfm:8080). It may or may not work but at least that way if something happened on chat that crashed that server there could be a chance the other server stayed up.

I've been doored often before, but I've never had so many occasions on which every9one in the chat was chucked out at once. Nor has it happened so often before...I rarely manage to complete a chat and leave these days...it all goes down first

I will accept the balme......it is my Chat tag game that has it all screwed up. In retrospect, probably a bid idea. Besides Openmike gets all upset when she is NOT it, so it just is not worth losing friends over. I renounce chat tag immediately.

The raidersoft java thing I run that puts no burden on my servers but tends to stay up is free. See see here

Very admirable of you Kendall I'm sure but how in any way does that address my point that there are occasions where free software can be more reliable that paid for software?

Maybe I wasn't trying to address your point. I just get damned sick of people winging about the reliability of the Mudcat. I certainly get my moneys worth out of it.

To be honest Kendall, it's a pain in the arse at the moment and has been so since Christmas. Maybe you don't try to get on it as often as some of us, but something like 50% of the time the site seems to be down, and it's a real pain when you're having a good chat and it crashes in the middle. This used to happen sometimes and everyone was used to it, but lately it's been happening every other time I've been in. It IS aggravating.

But Lynne what you do not realise is Max has a life.

I'll offer some perspective on this one. I'll admit different scales but I think we within targets we set achieve them most of the time.

Anamill gave something like Max having a wife and kid. It sort of pisses me off as a reason.

My choice to run web sites over the last few months has included a 999 call because I had a fit through a sort of enforced alcohol withdrawl, followed by 2 others - I could have died. Then my favourite cat got killed - only a little 1 year old. then Pip gets shingles - still can't move her right arm properly, then Peter took a funny do and we needed to 999 him and he got taken in because of something on an ECG. Peter comes home then he has what now seems to be a (oddldy later) post stroke siezure but we thought it a stroke and there was another 999 call and he was admitted again. Then I stupidly hit the bottle again, only really strongly for one day and a few extras the nexr couple of days and probably need a detox but apart from one day I don'r think we let our customers down - I think in fact there have been several customers come over to the Annexe who don't come there normally commenting on Mudcat.
