Review: Amos' Beyond the Lighthouse CD

10 Mar 05 - 11:49 PM (#1432021)
Subject: Review: Amos' Beyond the Lighthouse CD
From: Deda

As Amos' (ever so much) younger sister, I'm his earliest fan. I've listened to him with lots of love and joy all my life, ever since he taught himself guitar as a young teenager, learning some of his first numbers from the Burl Ives records in our playroom. So I was very tickled to find his cd "Beyond the Lighthouse" in my mailbox a while ago. I figured it would be good old familiar Amos singing good old familiar folk songs. Well, it's actually far better than that. All the songs and all the cuts are beautiful -- their lyrics, their tunes, and their execution. He chose wonderfully, and he's singing wonderfully. He's in better voice than he has been in years (due in part, I'd guess, to his victory over the demon Cigarettes which he'd been addicted to almost as long as he's played the guitar). If you haven't heard Amos sing, I urge you to give yourself a treat. He has a lovely warm, cheerful bass voice, a little like Gordon Bok if he'd had some really great news. None of the cuts on this CD are old or early Amos repertoire; not that they're new, but I haven't heard Amos perform them before. He does numbers as disparate as "The Rose" and "The Glory Trail," and songwriters as varied as Townes Van Zandt and Christine Lavin. One of the cuts is Amos' own composition, and anyone who's read any of the old Song Challenge threads knows that he's a genius poet/wordsmith -- and this song holds up very well, even surrounded by such stellar company. (When I first heard it, the family-critic in me was carping "mixed metaphors, Amos!" -- but the more I listen to it the less I can criticize it and the more I like it.) I've had this CD in my car CD player for a week, and I spend about an hour in my car on a normal workday. I'm not tired of it yet. Every day at work, I find myself humming the last number I heard, for hours. I haven't yet gotten to the point where I skip over a particular cut, because there's none that I've lost interest in. It's a great CD and I'm thrilled to have it. I want a bunch more, to send to my kids and cousins. I don't know how you order it, but my guess is you could send him a PM.

Amos-

Here's a deal. I'll swap you a copy of my UNCOMMON SAILOR SONGS CD. I suppose we could meet at the continental divide and exchange CD's there but maybe I'll just take a chance and mail you one.

Would be nice to see a track list.

The only thing better than this CD is having himself singing on my front porch. The album is stellar, I'm green with envy at his tasty, sensitive and highly evolved guitar accompaniment, and his voice and choice of songs, as always, is superb. The song on this album that Amos wrote is just one of many fine songs he's penned.

Aside from the wonderful musicianship displayed here, I think Amos's love of the music, and the experience of sharing it, comes through loud and clear. And passion is always so compelling.

Sign me a devoted fan!

I've gotten mine the other day in the mail and have been enjoying Amos's deep base voice and guitar work as I drive around in my van. There's a lot of good road songs, not to mention love songs, on this CD but sadly only one song that he composed himself.

My favorites include "High Chin Bob," "I Remember Loving You," and "Sweet Wyoming Home."

When's the video coming out?

As to the video, you'll have to show a little 'skin' if you want a video to sell. Fame has its price. LOL

I am on my 4th, or is it 5th? listen - I just keep pressing the play button when it finishes. eek, I'm on track 12 again, almost time to hit replay.

Thanks, Amos for this lovely CD.

I've been having a very frustrating time trying to scan pics to send to Mudcat & other friends & listening to Amos's lovely voice is (almost) making the effort bearable, tho I dunno what Apple is going to make of my restrained remarks about their stupid error message!!

"Say You Will" apparently was not written by Dave Mallett but by Paul Metsers.

He has performed it on one of his CDs and claims authorship in a recent e-mail.

Amos is a Troubador.

If you ever saw him ambling across the Getaway grounds with his slouch hat and his Martin slung on his shoulder, you would know at a glance. He can sing most anything given just a hint, and he can sell a song and make the ladies weep or speed up the beat of their hearts. 600 years ago,he would have wandered from castle to castle and all the towns in between, and he would have been just as comfortable in a barn with two farmers thumping on washtubs and sipping cider, as he would be in the boudoir of the Princess at midnight. As good as he is on CD, Amos is just great fun to watch and jam with.
I count myself lucky to have spent as much time as we have together, and he's gone from someone whose wit, humor, and spirit I enjoyed, to someone whose friendship and brotherhood means very much to me.

And that will make him blush, but I mean every word.
