Can anyone post the lyrics for "Random Canyon" by Peter Staempfel? I'm most interested in a reference I think it makes to Patrick Sky. Heard it years ago on a Dave Van Ronk album. -- Slim

Can't remember it clearly; that's why I asked. Something like "and I dreamed that Patrick Sky left town..."

I believe the reference to Patrick Sky is in the song "Gaslight Rag".

Stampfel's 'Random Canyon' is on The Holy Modal Rounders 'Alleged in their own time' Rounder 3004. The lyrics contain no reference to 'Patrick Sky'.

All I remember of the lyrics to "Random Canyon" is something like,

Take me back to Random Canyon
where my unicorns are horny in the spring,
where my unicorns are horny in the spring.

It's been intermittently driving me nuts since Jimmy Carter was president.

Mike Regenstreif played the song in May of 2001. He might be the guy to ask. He's at

RANDOM CANYON
Written by Peter Stampfel
As sung by Peter Stampfel on "The Holy Modal Rounders: Live in 1965" (2003)

Take me back to Random Canyon,
Where the griffin's always riffin',
And the unicorn is horny in the spring;
Where the crystal coyote calls
Over sleepy garden walls,
And the wireless wombat wanders on the wing,
And the wireless wombat wanders on the wing.

Near the mislocated mesa
With my counterfeit contesa
Who is secretary for the local grange,
And the psychedelic sage
Keeps the cattle in a rage,
And the changing range is getting pretty strange,
And the changing range is getting kinda strange.

There I'll spend each golden year
Watching all the cattle veer,
For no sight I've ever seen provokes more charm,
And the dragons fly by night,
And they very seldom bite,
Though if you grapple with one he'll do you harm;
If you mess with one he'll do you harm.

I believe I'll never leave,
And I'll never, never grieve,
When I go back to the canyon that I love.
Other canyons aren't as deep,
And their walls incline to seep.
You can take your other canyons and go shove.
You can take your other canyons and go shove.

I'm a Random Canyon fan,
And I'll mess with any man
Who denies that Random Canyon is the best.
You will find no canyon greater
Either side of the equator.
Random Canyon is the glory of the west.
Random Canyon is the glory of the west.
