Lyr Req: Bella Was a Barmaid

Subject: Music hall song? Bella Was a Smart Barmaid??
From: Barbara

A friend of mine has been looking for this song for years. She remembers it from the end of one of those Masterpiece theater bits, where they stuck it on when the main show ran short. She thinks it's a music hall song. Anyone??
Blessings,
BArbara

I have fond memories of Eleanor McCready singing this at the Player's Theatre.

BELLA WAS A BARMAID
(J. P. Harrington & George Le Brunn)

Bella was a barmaid, tricky as could be
Bella knew her business very thoroughly
She waited on her customers who called for S. and B.
Bella was a smart barmaid
Leaning on the counter, telling funny tales
Bella was the idol of the merry males
She smiled on whiskey customers, but frowned on all the ales
Bella was a smart barmaid.

CHORUS
Bella was a barmaid! Baa aa aa
Bella was a barmaid at the 'Rising Star'
Of spicy little anecdotes she never was afraid
Bella was a bar-aa-bar barmaid.

Bella dear accepted presents - pretty thing
Which the dear old Johnnies daily used to bring
She'd hug 'em for a bracelet, or she'd kiss 'em for a ring
Bella was a smart barmaid
When they sent her letters in a spoony style
Saying, 'Be my wifey,' Bella smiled a smile
She said, 'They might be useful.' so she kept 'em on a file
Bella was a smart barmaid.

CHORUS
Bella was a barmaid! Baa aa aa
Bella was a barmaid at the 'Rising Star'
She sued for breach of promise, just to make it good for trade
Bella was a bar-aa-bar barmaid.

Bella on a motor, went out with a friend
What did you say? Male friend? Yes, you may depend
While rushing down a hill, she said, 'Oh, what will be the end?'
Bella was a pale barmaid
Something went wrong somewhere - car began to jump
When it did a hornpipe, Bella got the 'lump'
She went up in the air, and she came down a mighty bump
Bella was a sore barmaid.

CHORUS
Bella was a barmaid! Baa aa aa
Bella was a barmaid at the 'Rising Star'
She rather hurt her dignity, when she fell, I'm afraid
Bella was a bar-aa-bar barmaid.

Bella sighed to figure 'neath the soft lime-lights
Went on in a ballet one of her off nights
And she wore a wreath of roses, and a smile, and yellow tights
Bella was a plump barmaid
Young Lord Razzle Dazzle saw her leg display
Said, 'With such a figure, what a partner, eh?'
And so he made her Lady Razzle Dazzle right away
Bella was a smart barmaid.

CHORUS
Bella was a barmaid! Baa aa aa
Bella was a barmaid at the 'Rising Star'
You'd never think, to see her at the Marlborough House Parade
She was once a bar-aa-bar barmaid.
