23 Mar 05 - 02:22 PM (#1441792) Subject: An Easter Like You've Never Heard From: Ferrara Flawn Williams, who works with NPR, sent me the following information about a radio program that will be broadcast this Friday morning, March 25. It sounds pretty neat to me, and it fits here because Flawn mentioned bodhrans :-). Flawn says I can share it here: ************************ Next Friday, March 25, NPR's Morning Edition will feature another one of our4 "Radio Expeditions" reports which are coproduced with National Geographic. In this latest one, John Burnett takes a look/listen at the Easter Week celebrations of the Tarahumara indigenous communities in the Sierra Madre uplands of Chihuahua Mexico. I did the field recording (last Easter!) and sound design for this story. I think you'll enjoy it if you like: --a VERY different evolution of the Easter story --interesting cultural traditions linked to the seasons --stories about drinking and/or home brewing --bodhran conventions --old time fiddling of Easter tunes from the WAY southern mountains I also manage to make an uncredited appearance in the piece....listen carefully! The story will air at 5:40, 7:40, and 9:40am Eastern. Consult your local station listings for when it carries Morning Edition. In DC, WAMU carries all three feeds, but WETA only the 7:40am. The audio report, plus some pix and video, should also be available for streaming starting later that day on npr.org: http://www.npr.org/templates/topics/topic.php?topicId=1023 Happy listening! --Flawn |

We had a group of Tarahumara Indians perform at our local youth center last year - music, dance. . . it was wonderful. And totally different from anything found in this area. PB |

24 Mar 05 - 08:29 PM (#1443114) Subject: RE: Tarahumara Indians Easter Celebration From: Cornflake The Tarahumara are totally different. I backpacked down the Barranca de Cobre in 1976, which is their territory. Then, at least, it was very wild and even a little scary. |
