Just heard on the news about another earthquake of 8.2 on the Richter scale has occurred near Indonesia, close to the site of the last one, which was 9 on the scale. Hope it doesn't all happen again!

Over 1000 now said to be dead, from falling buildings, not tsunami this time.

How much more can these people suffer?

er - not to be too precise - but the experts have been saying there would be more. The relief of stress in one point will put other points under more stress. It was said we are in for a period of quakes. And some of them will be under the sea.

The better response is to prepare. expensive of time, effort and money. And in areas that don't suffer directly, it will be hard to justify when the fault line quietend down. Safety never comes cheap.

We get quakes in the UK and it has been known for deaths to occur, however rare. But then we don't prepare here.

Let us hope the charity money they find difficult to spend in the coastal areas will go to the quake areas.

You can keep an eye on earthquakes worldwide in near real-time by checking here .

Despite the horrible tragedy of them, they are fascinating. Click on the west coast of Sumatra, and you will see that there have been dozens there in the last week - all of them large enought to be considered hugely newsworthy if they happened in the US or UK.
