Lyr Req: Ach please daddy? / Ag Pleez Deddy

29 Mar 05 - 03:12 PM (#1446108)
Subject: Lyr Req: Ach please daddy
From: GUEST,Simon Furey

I have an "ear worm" at the moment, which is a fragment of a South African song from the 1960s, called "Ach please Daddy". I've found a fragment of it via Google (www.habonimdrorfoundation.org/hdf/songs/another.html), but that doesn't include the bit I remember about "Ach please Daddy, won't you take us down to Durban/We want to see the fella fight Sky High Lee".
Does anyone have the full lyrics anywhere, so I can get the wretched thing out of my system?
Cheers
Simon

Two things that amaze me:
First, how fast you people came back with an answer! I'm seriously impressed. Thanks very much indeed to you all.
Secondly, I had no idea it was one of Jeremy Taylor's songs. I saw him often enough in Sussex (even booked him at Horsham Folk Club) in the 70s, but I never heard him sing it. Well, well. We live and learn.

Now, you people who are competing for speed, you get no credit at all if you link elsewhere to a song we already have at Mudcat. And if we don't have the song at Mudcat, then you're supposed to post it if it's something that would be of interest to folkies.
And if you link to "Yet Another Digital Tradition" (a mirror of your own database), you go down in infamy....

The best recorded time, one minute, has been accomplished by a very few Mudcatters. I think my personal best is three minutes.

I reckon this is the most complete version - most of the others have a word or two wrong. And this one is in the correct dialect.

AG PLEEZ DEDDY (THE BALLAD OF THE SOUTHERN SUBURBS)
(Jeremy Taylor, 1961)

Ag pleez, Deddy, won't you take us to the drive-in?
All six, seven of us, eight, nine, ten!
We wanna see a flick about Tarzan an' the Ape-men,
An' when the show is over you can bring us back again.

CHO: Popcorn, chewing gum, peanuts an' bubble gum,
Ice cream, candy floss an' Eskimo Pie!
Ag, Deddy, how we miss nigger balls an' licorice,
Pepsi Cola, ginger beer and Canada Dry!

Ag pleez, Deddy, won't you take us to the fun-fair?
We wanna have a ride on the bumper-cars.
We'll buy a stick of candy floss and eat it on the octopus.
Then we'll take the rocket ship that goes to Mars. CHO.

Ag pleez, Deddy, won't you take us to the wrestling?
We wanna see an ou called Sky High Lee.
When he fights Willie Liebenberg, there's gonna be a murder,
'Cos Willie's gonna donner that blerrie yankee. CHO.

Ag pleez, Deddy, won't you take us off to Durban?
It's only eight hours in the Chevrolet.
There's spans of sea an' sand an' sun an' fish in the aquarium.
That's a lekker place for a holiday. CHO.

Ag pleez, Deddy…

Voetsek!

Ag sis, Deddy, if we can't go to bioscope
Or go off to Durban, life's a heng of a bore.
If you won't take us to the zoo, then what the heck else can we do
But go on out and moer all the oukies next door?

I've been singing it since 1963!
Robyn

Jeremy has played our club 3 times in 3 years and on his last visit he opened with this and he didnt have to singa word as the audience did it for him.

That was one heck of a buzz.

This was a hit record back in the early 60's and at college we had a health lecturer with the initials D.A.D. I'd just learned some chords on guitar and wrote a skit;
"Ag pleeze DADdy won't you give us a health lecture"..etc
I sang it in a college review.
That was my first gig!
Two months ago, 43 years later, Jeremy Taylor sat through my set in Hope Village Hall.
Bloody Hell..that went quickly!!!

Jeremy's in Llantrisant, too - Wednesday November 23rd at 8.30pm. We saw JT the ont time and just had to see him again. Interesting fact is that he's a local boy, living in Wales!

In response to Breezy's message: I'm completly all right, thanks - making progress slowly but surely. Olly Price and I were performing at the Miskin Festival, which whetted my appetite somewhat – we didn't go looking for gigs, but I was pleasantly surprised when a couple of festival organisers approached me (individually) to see if we were free. Is Luxembourg small? Is the Pope Catholic? Do bears…? Of course we'll come!

I came looking for this lyric never really thinking I'd find it.

I remember the song as being a big hit in the summer of 62.I was in the British Merchant Navy and we were up and down the E African coast. The song was getting lots of airtime on Radio LM( Radio Lourenço Marques).

Ah. First heard this when I was working on the SA VAAL from Southampton to South Africa. i.e. Cape Town. East London, Durban and back. In '63. Used to have an LP with it on, but I lost that somehow.

I liked his "All Along the South Soast" and "Red Velvet Steering Wheel Cover Driver" too.

Great Stuff.

Used to gig with Sid Carter.
But I'm talking ages ago.

And just a reminder that his double album with SPIKE MILLIGAN, from 1973 - Live from Cambridge - which went on to become the basis for their successful show - For One Week Only - is being re-issued on Double CD in the New year.

Details on here when it emerges.

I lived in Kenya from 1960 to 1964 and remember hearing this song on British Forces Broadcasting Service radio. I had no understanding what some of the lyrics meant but always thought it was a funny song. By the way in 1960 I was 7.

I know exactly the link you're talking about. Not only are there lyrics missing, but a line or two are wrong on top of it. I remember the song fondly and was also searching for a recording or full lyrics, at least.

If anyone has this please let us know. I think the artist is a South African child entertainer.

Always liked Jeremy Taylor ! He did this song a few years back,at Ringwood Folk Club ; he went to some length to explain things like "Nigger Balls",which I think he said were like giant, brown anniseed-ball "Gob Stoppers", etc. Then he told us about his time in South Africa, and the village where he had lived and worked. A group of people at the back stood up and started waving & cheering---they were from that very village ! JT was completely blown away !

Here's Jeremy's notes on this song from his website above:

I vividly remember writing this song. I remember the little flat in Violet Street and the room I used to pace around at nights nursing a cholicky daughter. Sometimes I would put her in the karrikot and into the back of my 1947 Morris Minor (the one with the split windscreen and side valves) and we'd drive around the Southern suburbs. Jess would sleep then. But as soon as we got back and I stopped the car she would wake up again so I don't know if it was such a good ruse after all. But at least she and her mother got some sleep, until the next feed. Today she plays the 'cello and nurses two children of her own.
One curious fact about AG PLEEZ DEDDY is that after I had written a verse and a chorus of it I threw it away because I thought it was dumb. It probably was dumb, but three weeks later I read an ar-ticle about a writer, a serious one, who said there was one golden rule about writing and that was to finish whatever you had started, other-wise you would never learn anything. Reluctantly I hauled my verse and chorus out of the dustbin, wrote three more verses, added "Voet-sek" and sang it surreptitiously one night to Manny Wainer, the owner of the Cul de Sac, who gave me encouragement and a pound note and said, "Sing it to the people tonight." I was later persuaded to take it to the Gallo Record Company. A gentleman - Phil Goldblatt - listened patiently while I sang it to him then explained that no one would buy it because it wasn't commercial. He added, however, that he would always be happy to listen to any future efforts.

AG PLEEZ DEDDY was recorded a year later (live - at a Cape Town recording of Wait a Minim) and the single sold more copies in South Africa than any of Elvis Presley's.

The birth of a song is like any other birth; it can be short and sweet or long and arduous and you never know what you are going to get at the end of it. You just have to take each one as it comes.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Picked up this thread doing research for a suitable song for Cape Town G&S to take to the fetival in Buxton this year. Out director's name is Teddy, it's a case of "Ag pleez Teddy.....".
First heard the song at Glasgow Uni in the late 60's sung by a young lady from Southampton whose name escapes me 40 years on.
But, Simon Fury, I was brought up in Arundel - went to high school in Horsham - and used to sing in the folk circuit in the pubs and clubs round there.
Moved out to South Africa in 1972 and met JT when he was singing at a club in Jo'burg, shortly after I arrived.
Memories are made of this!
