BS: Environmentalism gone mad in Oz

From: George Papavgeris

Yesterday we saw on the BBC News an item about horses running into a flock of seagulls during a race in Melbourne. Several riders were unseated and it was mayhem. Unusual or what...

Well, it now turns out that Melbourne Racecource had plans for installing an audio bird-repellant system, such as they have installed in some airports, to deal with this problem which is well-known in the area. They had to scrap their plans however, when local environmentalist groups complained about the "traumatic effect" the system would have on the birds!

What a load of boll***s...

Doesn't sound reasonable to me, el Greko. Is it possible that the last word has not yet been spoken?

Here in the US birds- seagulls, eagles, swans, whatever- are routinely hazed away from airports, power lines, vulnerable areas of all kinds. Even from golf courses. I remember reading of a dog that was 'hired' to harass geese.

There's an Aussie the Brisbane City Council gets in to fly his Raptor around in the City to scare away the seagulls.

It does not surprise me, El Greko. Aussies have become very "touchy-feely" nowadays, and you can hardly move in the parks for tree-huggers.

Were any horses injured in the race? That might swing it for the environmentalists. Injuring people probably wouldn't.

I didn't see any horses falling on the video shown by the BBC, just 3-4 riders. Apparently there were some human injuries, nothing fatal.

As this made the news, perhaps the system will be allowed now to be installed.

I think you are a bit harsh on the Aussies though, Xander.

I mean it, EG - the Aussies coined the phrase "whingeing Pom", but take a look at them today. Be careful of this, beware of that, mind the feelings of little Kylie, protect the sharks (I ask you!), you can hardly take a walk to the billabong without offending someone.

I would not be surprised to see a law come in that mandates foam-sponge roo-bars.

Where are the pioneers who won a continent?

Of course we British are to blame for Australia, we populated it with criminals and undesriables, just look what happened when they started breeding.

And don't you Americans get too smug, the good old US of A was once a British penal colony.

...Except it was all an April Fool's. Not the bit about the race, that was true. But the part about the racecourse wanting to install hazing and the environmentalists complaining was a figleaf of my own imagination, as Kath & Kim might say.

Gotcha, Robin, gotcha Ebbie and eric 't red. I didn't get Xander, but there is a good reason for that...

Are you sure, el Greko? *G* Years ago a friend of mine ran across the street from his car to me and handed me a birthday card. "I'm sorry I missed your birthday, but here is a card."

I said,"Well, that's sweet but actually my birthday is next month." He said, "It's not the 29th of October?" I said, "No. It's the 28th of November." He hesitated. "Are you sure?"

God's truth.

OK on the song. Do I get to choose? Actually, you have so many good ones... I know- I'll ask for one that you don't sing as frequently.

El Greko - I saw the original news item several times on TV.... :-)

You said it right - "What a load of boll***s... "

I was just thanking you for defending us Aussies...

Of course, IF you were really just having a go at us, then if I were you, I just wouldn't eat any more mangoes offered to you here.....

there is a variety called the 'turpentine mango'....

oh, damn, given it away now...

and the Raptor Guy does exist - has been on the media many times.

Robin,
Anything I wrote as "Xander" was fully retracted in the main thread where Xander played out ("Mudcat censorship - a proposal).

Turpentine mango, eh? To be honest, I found mangoes a bit of an acquired taste. My son swears by them though, and I know now that no Aussie Xmas is complete without them.

The UK equivalent is Brussels sprouts, I guess - at least mangoes don't have the same effect as them!

On Roy and HG last night they suggested that in the break between horse races the crowd could be armed with guns and shoot the seagulls - but only the seagulls. They suggested it might be good if we could have that 'American" experience of having guns and shooting the shit out of something living - and it would be enviromentally sound too! Those blokes! So humourous, yet so practical!

Comparing brussels sprouts to mangoes is like comparing a fish to a bicyle.

mangoes are the nectar of the goddesses, whereas brussels sprouts are - good for you.

They can Doug. Often the culprit is a little tiny parasite that ouves on the bark of trees; hug enough trees, and you run the risk of being attacked by that critter, which burrows into your cortex and drives you mad.

The parasite itself is spread from tree to tree by the reckless use of woodchips around the base of trees.

Not that different from mad cow disease, really.

Mental picture of El G in cortex - ROFLMAO.
