Pentangle's House Carpenter

I've been listening to Pentangle's House Carpenter (gorgeous pairing of banjo and sitar, sounds so exotic) the lyrics I find aren't that hot. Did they rewrite it?

Hi,

you can look here :-

http://www.folk-network.com/

Go to Internet Resources in the left panel and then select Online Books, then click on Anthology of American Folk Music, Pages 24 and 25 have The House Carpenter as collected by Cecil Sharpe.

Here are the URLs for the pages,

Many, many American versions of that song. Pentangle didn't bother to say where they they got their songs from, generally, but there's a decent chance of identifying it with patience. They probably learned it off a record made by an American revival performer, though (people like Caroline Hester), which might slow things down; and they did sometimes re-write a bit.

I must confess that as beautiful as their version is, I preffer the Sweeney's Men one....

Anyway, I've kept looking and think I found one that's close:

I love that version except for Jacqui McShee's singing. At the time she seems to have adopted some of the vocal mannerisms of sixties pop singers which didn't suit a lot of the material that she sang with Pentangle. She sang much better with the John Renbourn Group later on. Just my 2 cents.vl

(Joan Baez did a version on her first (or second) album on Vanguard that still gives me chills.)

There is a good version complete with very "haunting" music on a double compliation CD by Mr Fox. A group "famous" as a one hit wonder in the UK with a single of the same name.

Reading through this very old thread I noticed the question of where Pentangle got their lyrics for House Carpenter. The answer is that they got them, almost word for word, from Jean Ritchie.

I have not heard Jean Ritchie's House Carpenter,
but I did listen to Jacqui McShea and the Pentangle's version.
And I recall how carefully the lyrics were enunciated,
clearly understandable even in one listen.
It doesn't surprise me if those were Jean Ritchie's lyrics.
