Lyr ADD: Black Diamond (Hamblen - from Hank Snow)

Does anyone know of a song about a person being helped by a native with a bone in his nose. It may just be a reading with music in the background. But it talks about no greater love than this that he lay down his life for a friend. It seems the native helped the man and then maybe he was killed. It may have been by Stuart Hamlin. I haven't heard it in years, but would love to know the words.

Hanna, do you remember where/when you heard it? Do you remember any part of the words of the song at all?

George:
I heard the song in the late 40's or early 50's. It may have been something relating to World War ll. The person relating the message may have been injured in the war and was found my an Aborigines and protected from the enemy. That is the only tribe I remember reading about who wore bones through their nose. It may have been a religious song since it referes to No Greater Love Than This. I do not remember any of the exact words, just the "story" of the song.

Lyrics found at The Hank Snow Country Music Centre:

BLACK DIAMOND
Written by Stuart Hamblen
Recorded by Hank Snow

SUNG: Greater love hath no man than this,
That he lay down his life for a friend.

NARRATE: These eyes of mine have seen some things
I'm sure you wouldn't find in a book.
There just isn't words to describe them all
And at times I'm sorry I looked;
But when the day comes around and age throws me down
And pens me in an old rocking chair,
I'll just close my eyes and hunt up an old friend:
Black Diamond with his wooly black hair.

We lost a fight on an island of hell
That lies in a tropical sea,
And the blast of a shell had knocked me to sleep
And I laid with the dead for a week.
When I opened my eyes a heathen had me.
He carried me away to his lair,
And in the days to come I gave him that name:
Black Diamond with his wooly black hair.

Hidden away in a cave in the hills,
He held a cup to my lips,
But I couldn't drink to gather new strength
And the pain and a shattered hip,
But I soon got used to that hideous face
That would have given death a scare,
An angel of mercy with a bone through his nose:
Black Diamond with his wooly black hair.

He'd gone away to fetch my food
And the enemy got wise to the game,
And from the crest of the hill I saw him knocked down.
He never would mention my name.
They beat him and tortured him and slashed him up
And left him hanging there.
I cried as I crawled but death beat me to him,
Black Diamond with his wooly black hair.

Though these eyes of mine see a million men
With money or power or fame,
I'll never meet one who would crowd him awhile
Or go to the top of his name.
These eyes aren't forgetting the way that he died.
I live cause he paid my fare,
For he never would say where he hid me that day,
Black Diamond with his wooly black hair.

SUNG: Greater love hath no man than this,
That he lay down his life for a friend.

[Recorded by Hank Snow on "Memories Are Made of This" (1970). It is also on the Bear Family collections "The Singing Ranger, Vol. 3" (1994) and "The Singing Ranger, Vol. 4" (1995).]

I was born in 1945 while my father served in the Philippines. Growing up I was always interested in war songs and stories . I believe that I was about 9 when my grandfather gave me a 78 with this song on it. I knew the words by heart. He told be that it was about a man who was cared for by a native who found him injured.
I do not believe that it was Hank Snow singing it but don’t remember. I have heard Hank Snow version on Utube and it just doesn’t sound the same
Unfortunately, I tucked this record into a LP album and then the album was sold by mistake at a yard sale.

I also came across and old recording of this that my father had on some reel to reel tapes. It does indeed sound like Stuart Hamblen,(hard to mistake that voice) but i can't be positive. I also have the Hank Snow version but that is different.I can't seem to find out if Stuart did a recording of this or not.

It was definitely recorded by Stuart Hamblen. I heard it many times on the radio in the 1950's. I have it somewhere on a reel tape, if I could find it and it still works.

My apologies for the blank post. I found out by trial and error that Mudcat will not accept 'hot links' to Google Images. Anyway, indeed Stuart Hamblen did release the song, and the people who heard him do it are right. FWIW.
