Lyr Req: Fields of Green

Subject: Tune Req: Is this an Irish song; if so, title?
From: Swave N. Deboner

I came across the midi file at the "blue clicky" below a couple years ago. I really like the music, and I've tried to find out the the full name of the song, and the lyrics, if there are any. The webmaster of the site where I found it has no idea. He only put it in his midi collection because he liked it too. I've searched all over the web for a song called "Fields", but none I've found are this one. Anybody ever heard it?

I think ity is supposed to be Fields of Athery. Yes, Irish. Not trad but often mistaken for it. I'm not an expert though.

Fields of Athenry is a Pete St John song

Hey Amos,

I had considered that at first, but I couldn't fit the lyrics of Fields of Athenry with the rhythm of this tune. At least not the words Pete St. John wrote. I have a hunch that it isn't from Ireland. It sounds more like it could be from the American Civil War, an era during which many a tune was created by Irish-Americans.

It's not Fields of Athenry. Don't know what it is either.

Sounds like an old cracked 78 I once had, it does go on and on and on, not The Fields of Athenry, could be the theme music for The killing fields.

To me,it sounds like some sort of anthem formed piece using bits from "Fields of Athenry", "Danny Boy", and finally, the Irish Nat'l Anthem. What say you?

That's one of my midis that someone has fiddled with a wee bit to change the instrument voices.

The song is a beauty, titled FIELDS OF GREEN. (It's not traditional, by the way.) I fell in love with it when I heard it on a Sean Dunphy LP by the same title.

If my cerebral hard drive is working OK, the lyrics are close to these...

If fields of green and skies of blue
Were mine to give, I'd give to you
The brightest stars God made to shine
I'd give you if they were mine.
If every bird in every tree
Knew of the love I'd give to thee
They'd sing of joy, that's what they'd do
And the love song they'd sing I'd give to you.
There's so much that I want to give to you.

Barry "T", hmmmm. Might you be the great Barry Taylor, creator of many fine midis? I listen to your midi tunes all the time. As a matter of fact, I thought "Fields" sounded like your work and considered trying to contact you in my quest for the source of the tune. But then I thought better of it. I wouldn't want to impose. I'm delighted to find my hunch was on the money. Even more pleased to know the tune has lyrics. Now I can add it to my rep. Many thanks. Guess I was wrong about it not being Irish.

ard mhacha and Megan L: Good guess on "The Killing Fields", the etude in Mike Oldfield's score for the movie of the same name. The chords are quite similar to the song I was searching for.

Dunno about the 'great' part, Swave, but yup... I'm the slightly obsessed midi maker from years past. 'Been retired lately cause even *I* enjoy streaming audio! ;-)

This midi was one I shared a long time ago, then pulled it off my site when I discovered it wasn't PD.

Sadly, I can verify that the song consists only of those short lyrics. Pity... It's such a nice tune it begs for another verse or two. I recall that on the recording Sean Dunphy sang a verse, followed it with an instrumental verse, then repeated the lyric.
