Hi - take a look at the 1997 CD called "Voices of Winter," by Priscilla Herdman, Anne Hills, and Cindy Mangsen. I think you'll find several suitable songs there.

How about one of my favourite Jethro Tull songs, 'Solstice Bells'? From the album 'Songs from the Wood.'

Seasonal greetings! Sam

Try "Songs Of Ceremony" Folk Songs of Britain vol. #9 on Topic 12T197 collected by Peter Kennedy copyright 1961. Here's a list of the songs. Cornish Wassail Song, New'r Even's Song, the Mari Lwyd Ceremony, Joys Of Mary, Holly & The Ivy, !2 Days of Christmas, Bitter Withy, As I Sat On A Sunny Bank, The Singing Of The Travels, Divers & Lazarus, Gower Wassail Song, Taladh An Leinibh Losa, St. Clement's Song, The Shrove Tuesday Song, Shephards Arise, Cherry Tree Carol, Somerset Wassail Song, Hunting The Wren, Cheshire Souling Song, Six Jolly Miners, John Barleycorn, Hal-An-Tow, Huntingdonshire May Carol, Cornish May Carol.

Though not alot on the solstic side of things but these field recordings of the various seasonal ceremonies are well worth a listen. Barry

Check out the new Christmas CD in the Lomax series from Rounder (ROUN 1719, I think). While you're at it, look at the Folk-Legacy web page under "English folk music" for the several "Nowell Sing We Clear" CDs by John Roberts and Tony Barrand. There's even a CD called "'Twas On a Night Like This" which contains some other "seasonal" material, not all Christmas. You can see it by clicking on the cover image at the top of the CD page. AND, for my idea of a great solstice song, listen to Gordon Bok's "Turning Toward the Morning" on Bok, Muir & Trickett's "The First Fifteen Years, Volume 1," (CD-1003) and "Turning of the Year" on the brand new "Harbors of Home" CD, also described on the web site. Hope this helps.

Hi, starbird. Welcome to the Mudcat. If you put the song title, "Light is Returning" in the grey search box up on the right where it says "Lyrics & Knowledge," there are several threads which come up with the lyrics posted.

All the best,

kat

When I hear the first winter solstice song of the evening, I know it's going to be a long night.

Have you heard Nickomo's Solstice carol? You can contact him at nickomoandrasullah.co.uk - it is a song that is really meant for community harmony singing groups to sing - but I reckon there is a listening cd of it out there too.

I just wrote a verse for a solstice song, for which many tunes would fit:-

The days are short and the nights are long
and that is why I sing this song.
Take my hand and have no fear,
It is the turning of the year!

We'll eat a feast to celebrate.
We'll laugh and drink and stay up late.
Just sip your wine and quaff your beer,
It is the turning of the year.

The birds come close and eat our crumbs.
They plan for when the New Year comes.
They'll build a nest and sing out clear.
It is the turning of the year.

The wind blew strong and the leaves are gone,
But green shoots show before too long.
Cheerful daffs will soon appear,
It is the turning of the year.

The party's time to take your chance
to loudly sing and wildly dance.
Lift up your heart and give a cheer!
It is the turning of the year.

I would love it if you could find a singer!

Sue Hitchcock

Several Solstice songs on the Mudcat CD "This is Us: Until The Dark Time Ends."

You can find the lyrics here: Mudcat CD lyrics/

You can also hear these songs, as well as other seasonal songs on the CD if you purchase it - by itself or as part of the full set of 6 CDs.

Does anyone know the song 'Round and Round the Earth is Turning'? If so, does anyone have any information about it? Is it a solstice song? Is it a sacred song? Thanks
