Potential Southeastern US Mudgathering?

Howdy!

I'm just throwing out some feelers to see if anybody might be interested in a summertime gathering primarily for Mudcatters from the southeast. Everybody knows that gas prices have gotten outrageous, and trips to DC for the Getaway are probably looking less attractive to some people. So, why not have something in our own backyard?    Nothing as elaborately organized as the Getaway, just a chance to get together and pick, sing and tell lies. Just reserve a block of campsites somewhere or something like that.

I was thinking about midsummer as a possible time frame so as not to conflict with the Getaway in October. And, as far as location goes, it looks like someplace around Birmingham, AL would be pretty central to most southeasterners. Coincidentally, there just happens to be a place in Steele, AL near Birmingham called "Horse Pens 40" that some of you may have heard of or even been to. They host a couple of bluegrass festivals, pow-wows and other special events annually. They're open as a campground when no scheduled events are going on. The only thing they have scheduled for July is the weekend of the 4th so we'd have the other four weekends in July to choose from. It's in a reasonably mountainous area so summer temperatures should be bearable without having the heavy summer tourist traffic associated with the mountains of North Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas.

Anyway, if anybody's interested or has any ideas, this is the place to say so. Or PM me if ya like.

Bruce

I like Oak Mountain State Park in Birmingham. Peavine falls is there... northeastern Alabama has Fort Payne State Park. North Georgia is closer to me, though

Well, heck, if Peavine Falls is at Oak Mountain S.P. that would increase the chances of Bobert showing up since his wife's name is Peavine. Wonder if she was named after the falls? Or maybe the falls was named after her?

One reason I was thinkin' Horse Pens, though, is that it sounds like they're used to group events. Not that anything we might put together would be a big group, but they'd probably be able to give us a block of campsites more easily than a state park.

Hmmmm...I'd surely enjoy face-to-facing with my faceless Mudcat friends.
I cannot commit myself to attending at this point, but I am certainly interested. Uh...you ain't going to try to sell us your pots, are you there, bee-dubya?

Let me redo that...

I think it is a grand idea & if at all possible, I would attend such an event. Meeting my fellow Catter's would definitely be an experience! Let's hear from you all who are interested!

Gee, sounds great, but I'm booked to use up all my vacation time this year in July for a reunion up in Indiana.

It's not an official school-sponsored class reunion, but a gathering of our tightknit little group of college hippies, including several dozen acoustic pickers who used to jam together. This is only the third get-together for this bunch since various graduations in 67/68/69/70/71, and I missed the last one, so these are old friends ~ old musical friends ~ that I haven't seen since the early 80s, if then.

I love all y'all strangers to death, but not as much as these long-lost real-life compadres.

If the timing is really lucky, maybe I can piggy-back both events into the same two-week vacation. Peggy and I are planning to drive, and to squeeze in visits to Chicago and also maybe to her Dad's hometown of Kelley's Island, Ohio. That means we could go through Mississippi/Memphis/Illinois one way and Birmingham/Nashville/Kentucky/Ohio the other way, and perhaps time it to show up to meet at Horse Falls or P-Vine or wherever. Probably not, but with luck, maybe.

So, keep us posted; I'm bookmarking this thread...

No, Yore Majesty, I would be never impose upon my friends by tryin' to sell pots to ya'll. But if Tweed wuz to show up I would give him a custom-made drool-cup for his accordion free of charge.

Ahhhhhhh, first of all the P-Vine has made it clear to me that she ain't Peavine but P-Vine... Thought I'd use this occasion to clear that up...

Now as fir Birmingham, Al. Like that would be fine wid me, however, seeing as this is going to be one summer from Haites with me buying a hoise that needs a major addition and supervising the renovation of the hotel I bought (both in the Luray, Va. area) I'z done, done, done. Plus I'z allready committed (bad choice of words, Bobert...) to the Getaway *and* either Blues Week in Elkins or the Howling Wolf Blues Festival...

Like I said, I's said, "Put a fork in my 'cause I
z done, done, done!!!"........

But next year? Sho nuff...

Bobert

p.s. An' it would be nice to meet up with you and my bud, khanny kingman, Beezer...

Bee-dubya-ell, good idea, keep the idea alive. Don't count me in, but maybe think 30% chance I'll show up on a Saturday. I'll also work on Robin since I owe her a butt-kicking (and she owes me one), also KimC in Nyashvull, a good sport and someone I've tried to meet for several years now. There are lots of folks up I65, Louisville and beyond, that are possibilities.

I would be interested if the schedule works out but my July is pretty booked up this year. It would depend on when and where but sounds like a great idea. I might be able to squeeze in a day! I would love to meet you all

How far is Birmingham from Charlotte, NC? My mom and younger brother live in SC, just south of Charlotte, and I could possibly fit in a visit to AL if it isn't too far. I've always wanted to visit the deep south anyway.

Mileage Calculator says "The distance from Charlotte, North Carolina to Birmingham, Alabama is approximately 355.0 miles (571.2 km)." But they use a straight-line "as the crow flies" calculation system. Actual road distances can be quite a bit greater.

But this is still in the "thinkin' about it" stage. I just tossed Birmingham out because it seemed to be a reasonably central point. If someplace in Georgia is better for most folks (Charlotte to Atlanta = 220 mi) that's fine.

Ahem... Tupelo to Birmingham=144
Tupelo to Charlotte=446 miles

But "better for most folks is the key phrase!

Our schedule is a bit hard to pin down these days, but we might be able to work a southeast gathering in. JtS does a lot of travelling around Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana these days for his work and sometimes I go with him. JtS' work is scheduled on a quarterly basis with the last week in the quarter being the least busy. The rest of each quarter is a matter of what can be fit in and where.

Mapquest tells me that from Indianapolis to Birmingham is 588 miles, and that's just within the range I consider practical.

I'm with Khandu: I can't commit right now, but it's a real possibility.

Oh, all right! If I promise not to go, how many of you will commit? I'll just have a stay at the NYC...

There's no room for you at the NYCFTTS, Harpy. You'll have to come.

All seriousness aside, it does sound like the Birmingham area would be central for most folks who have responded. I'll be in that area for an art show in Springville the first weekend in May. I'll check out the Horse Pens 40 place and Oak Mountain State Park as well. There'll also be several artists at the show who live right in the area, and I can see if they have any other ideas.

Meanwhile, I'll try to keep this thread refreshed to maybe snare a few more suckers participants.

There's supposed to be a concert/gathering/mini-festival on Fourth of July weekend at the Mississippi John Hurt museum:

http://www.msjohnhurtmuseum.com/donate.html

The website provides no map, no schedule, no information ~ not much at all, in fact, except requests for donations. I've been in touch with Frank Delaney, the absentee webmaster (he lives in Seattle), pointing out that people are unlikely to visit the museum or to attend the annual shindig unless they are told what to expect and where to find it. He seems open to (indeed, anxious for) input from the public.

Anyway, I just love MJH so much that I might go, despite good reasons not to. Northern Mississippi is a fairly long one-day drive from New Orleans, and the July 4 weekend will be a mere week or so before my planned major trip mentioned above ~ two reasons not to go. Actually, the following weekend would be the best time for me to visit any Mississsippi Delta sites, while on my way north.

If we learn more about the event, if it starts looking like a good idea, and if I knew a few of y'all would be there to meet and greet, I just might find a way to show up.

Sounds like great fun to me. I'm across the pond for the first couple weeks in July, but otherwise pretty flexible - schedule-wise, anyway.

paddymac, shoot me a PM if you plan to come all the way down to New Orleans. I'll be elsewhere on the third weekend of July and probably for an indeterminate period before and/or after, but should be in town for the early part of the month, with the possible exception of a couple of days on 4th-of-July weekend.

Same for the rest of you, too. I've had a couple of pleasant meetings with Mudcatters passing through town, but recently missed a couple from England who were here briefly on the way to Cajun country. It was entirely my fault and I feel bad about failing to meet up with them; whoever visits next will probably benefit from my pent-up guilt feelings.

(I'm not offering lodging or anything like that, by the way ~ just comraderie, tour-guide services, etc.)
