St Albans festival in Australia

I just have to say how much I'm looking forward to the festival over the Anzac Weekend. My nearest and dearest has been v ill and I haven't managed to get outside for more than an hour or two for months - apart from going to work that is! Nuthin's gonna stop me from this one - the location, the people, the music - how good is it?

I think we are on the wrong thread Alison. Is there a St Albans in NSW, then?

That's Snalbans she means of course, Martin.

Hunter Valley? That sounds like a real ale.

Good guess, but wrong alcohol. The Hunter Valley which is not far away is actually a wine-growing area from which come some of the best wines in Australia - or the world for that matter. On the occasions I have visited my brother in Paris, I have always taken a few bottles with me, because they are the equal of or better than many of the wines you can get over there, and only a fraction of the price.

Mmm. I feel another Hunter Valley trip coming on!

Martin is doubly confused because there is a folk festival in St Albans here in the UK also run by a different Alison, that also gets promoted here on Mudcat.

Had me in a muddle for a few seconds too.

You can tell this thread isn't about the UK one because Breezy hasn't hijacked it yet.

Yepp, It's a good one. I came back from Victoria to attend, I just have to figure out how I'm getting there... St albans would be about my 2nd favourite fest, next to Majors Creek.
St Albans is in such a lovely place, I love those sandstone escarpments, and camping on the river-beach.

Are you coming from Sydney, moocowpoo? Do you need a lift? I can't, cos my seat in the car is booked already, but maybe somebody else can.

And do you or hilda fish need one of Bob Bolton's badges?

Yep jenny, I'm in Sydney, St peters.
A friend and I were considering hiring a car, but a lift with petrol-share (for the car of course, I find the taste a little strong) would be wonderful!, if anybody is going on the thur or fri.
Space required for; 2 people (1xandy,1xBronwen), 1 bouzouki, 1 fiddle,minimal luggage.
What does a Bob Bolton badge do?

Bob Bolton makes these rectangular badges, about the size of a credit card, with your name and the mudcat logo on. There's a hole on the top where you can either pin it on yourself or put a string through it and hang it round your neck, then other mudcatters know who you are, and if we like we can all meet up somewhere there. Some of us already know each other, but it's fun to meet the ones we don't know in real life.

So you're at St Peters. I'm not that far away - I'm at Earlwood, and I'm going to Snalbans on the Thursday, but as I said before, I don't have the room myself for a lift. We can ask around. Do you go to the Loaded Dog? It's on this Saturday (a week early because of Snalbans), followed by my folk club (North By Northwest) the next day, with Les Barker.

The badges are a nice idea, I think I would like to get one, how best to go about that?.
I've not been to the loaded dog, is it another folk club?
I go to the Harp session on Sunday and the Thurles cafe session.
Thanks Jenny, I would really appreciate you asking around for spare seats (with cars around them), bound for snaaalbans.

Yep, the Loaded Dog is at Annandale and is run by Mudcatter Sandra in Sydney. It is one of Sydney's best acoustic folk clubs - she would say the best, but, well, mine's pretty good too, although smaller. Both of our venues are blessed with wonderful acoustics. It's usually on the 4th Saturday, but this month it is a week earlier in order to avoid Snalbans. Website is here:

The Loaded Dog

I see it needs updating. This Saturday features Us Not Them and Triantan. They do usually have room for floor spots. You could always come along and ask to do one (hint hint), and we could make an announcement about your desire for a lift too.

Bob Bolton is usually there. He's a mudcatter, so if you PM him about a badge soon, he might even be able to give it to you on Saturday if you come.

G'day moocowpoo,

Unfortunately, I'm heavily involved in another event on Saturday night ... the Bush Music Club Bush Dance at Balmain High School. Sandra usually handles the door at this dance, on the 3rd Saturday ... and has The Loaded Dog on the 4th Saturday, but this month she had to switch - to a clash with the dance.

With another organiser also away (out of state) I'm committed to open up for the band at 6.00 PM, set out chairs and tables - probably keep in reserve for other jobs ... then put it all away and lock up - so I doubt that I can sneak off to the Folk Club! I will run off a laminated badge for your Mudcat name ... and try to get that to Sandra at our Committee Meeting tomorrow night, so you can get it, if you do came to The Loaded Dog.

I don't know if I'm going to make St Albans either - there seem to be some alternative calls on the Heritage Ensemble (big band, drawn from Sydney, Hunter Valley, Illawarra & ACT bands and players that played for the BMC Heritage Ball last weekend) and I'm musicians' coordinator, as well as a player, so I could be caught up in whatever is finalised.

Regard(les)s,

Bob

Sandra will definitely be there - I'm giving her a lift on the Thursday. Maybe she was talking about hilda fish's badge in the second line?

Have you given any more thought to coming to the Loaded Dog this Saturday? Or to Les Barker at my folk club on Sunday? I'll be on the door at the Dog.

Hei Jenny, On Sunday I'll be at the Harp session.
There MIGHT be a sat session at another venue, If not I could end up at the doadedlog..
Failing that, when I get to Snalbans, I'll keep an eye or two out for anyone wearing a mudcat badge.
Ps: I'm still searching for a thursday lift if anyone has space in their 4 wheeled object.
Thanks

G'day Moo,

I gave Sandra a selection of tags, with your Mudcat name in different fonts/treatments. I think the second sentence was actually addressed to hilda fish ... and I have done some tags for her ... and will get them to Sandra ... somehow.

It looks more and more like I will be otherwise committed over Anzac Weekend, so I probably won't get to St Albans!

Regard(les)s,

Bob

Great Bob, but what a shame it will be if you can't get to Snalbans. Here's hoping you can.

Anyway, moo, if I don't see you before that weekend, I'll be around from Thursday, and I shall endeavour to wear my Mudcat badge most of the time. We're intending to camp in the area between the pub and the river, probably along a bit - not right opposite the pub. And if you see someone with the handle "jack halyard", that will be my SO John Warner. If you find him, I can't be far away.

Now should we arrange a mudcatters meeting somewhere, like we do at the National? Maybe it could be a similar loose arrangement - like 1pm on any day we are free, at the tables and chairs near the food area in front of the Barn. How does that sound? That's where I often finish up around lunchtime anyway.

Jenny, how about a fire sing out side the barn as soon as the concert finishes on Saturday night. I sure enjoyed that last year. Pity they don't have a nice stairwell to sing in like the national. And will we see Rhymin Simon this year? see you there    Patrick & Kate

14 Apr 05 - 04:46 AM (#1460795)
Subject: RE: St Albans festival in Australia
From: JennyO

Hi Patrick and Kate. Yes, I'd say a fire sing there would be a definite starter. I don't think there are any enclosed spaces with acoustics like the stairwell - oh well, can't have everything.

Maybe we could have a session under the giant tarp on another night, too. That worked very well a couple of years ago. That's one of the reasons we camp in the riverside camping area, never behind the Barn - that one is apparently supposed to be the quiet camping area. I'm an owl, not a fowl - as you well know!! Last year we were trying to have a sing there with Ricarda and Nick and some others because that's where they were camped - quite early in the evening as I remember - and were told to take it somewhere else. I guess some people go to festivals to sleep - can't imagine why though :-)

Actually, I must give Simon a ring. He doesn't go very far these days cos of his back, but Snalbans is quite close to him, and he usually makes it to this one.

Seeyez, Jenny

Jack halyard and Sandra and I are off to Snalbans tomorrow. As I mentioned before, we are hoping to camp in the river camping area, further along from the pub - we might be able to have a session there too one night. I'll try to remember to take some blue and white flags I have and drape them along the edge of our tarp.

Hilda fish and moocowpoo, I have some Mudcat badges for you. I'll wear my badge and you might spot me. I'll try to be somewhere in the food area in front of the barn most days around lunch time (1pm ish).

See y'all there!
