He states that he considers him one of the best poets of this century. There is a wonderful 1 1/2 hour webcast of an interview they did at the Library of Congress recently. I prefer the Skyline Theatre on Navy Pier, but I guess they can pack more in Symphony Hall. Still - something about the CSO crowd that impedes standing up and singing along. Does anybody know who he is touring with for an opening act? Last year it was Iris - but I think she sounds better with a group than as a solo. Chris |

John did a great job of playing Souvenirs - my favority song of his to play. I wish I had a way to copy the video. They took a great close-up picture of how he plays the song. I have been leaving out some of the bass runs. And who knew that "illegal smile" referred to his dream-states where he got in contact with his Muse? Or was he smoking the good stuff all along? Also, I recorded this week's Folkscene and they played the new song Humans from the new cd - IMHO, it is a tad on the side of bitter, which he says in the video he tries to avoid by taking his time in writing personal songs, but still a very funny song. Maybe he should have waited some more time before commenting in song on the War. But I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. He has been a breath of fresh air in my life. I haven't been able to listend to Andrew Calhoun's negative Prine song after the second listening. Go John, Go Cubbies --Chris in Wheaton |

As to bitter humor--his great line in the song All The Best (I believe that was the title) for his ex wife----wishing her all the best and hoping she finds someone just like herself. A line such as "....sometimes you have to lose your mind to keep your sanity" is just so damned insightful, as far as I am concerned. Lake Marie is a lake near Lake Geneva - close to Chicago - where all the folks used to drive to in the Summer - before air conditioning. I would guess the song is a confluence of childhood memories there at the lake and the crime stories that were so common in Chicago in the '50's about bodies being found in the forest preserves - the traditional spot for leaving mob murder victims. I am impressed by the simple child-like quality John presents in both his song writing and his demeanor. He also has a simple, direct way of presenting his songs that appears like he is singing directly to you. His phrasing is quite impressive, especially considering his voice never as particularly good. He has an amazing way of carrying his blue-collar, Union, Viet Nam era and rural Kentucky roots onto the stage with him in a very high-brow type of setting. Brían |

I think it is one of his best albums---a lot different than some earlier ones and surely, to me, head and shoulders above the C/W covers he did a while back. He has a very pointed anti-- Iraq war song on this one. Though air play for that track will be impossible because one of the lines (a great Prine rhyme as always) is: "...just when you're feelin' good----a bird shits on your hood". So true. As sad a story as that of Milt Pappas' wife. Steve Goodman does a great solo version too of Souvenirs on the recent DVD of his Austin City Limits appearance.
