Lyr Req: Duvid Crockett (Mickey Katz)

I have been asked to transcribe the lyrics of this parody by someone in Australia who is creating a karaoke file. I have the MP3 file by Mickey Katz but will not have the time to do the transcription until after Passover. If someone here on Mudcat already has the lyrics, please post them here to this thread. Not only will it save me a lot of effort but it will enable my friend in Australia to create his karaoke file 3 weeks earlier rather than have to wait for me to do the transcription for him.   Thanks

Interesting request Mr. Zeller.

Mickey Katz - is not particularly noteworthy as a writer or composer - however, as the creator of his prodgeny BILLY JOEL - he is noted.

The immediate thought to your request is "King of the Wild Fronteir" - from a Disney series.

You will find the original (Tennessee Ernie Ford ? ((backside 16 tons 45rpm???) within the MC and Forum

No, Mickey Katz' son is Joel Grey (of "Cabaret" fame).

Funnily enough, we were in Camden last weekend, crossing Delancey Street, so the first lines of Duvid Crocket came to mind:
"Born on the corner of Delancey Street
The home of gefilte fish and kosher meat..."

I'll try to dig out the rest. Though I do have to ask you: WHY!!???! Some things are best left forgotten. Recovered memory always brings problems, or in this case tsures.

Some Jewish guy from Australia who knows that I am into folk music was told to contact me. He has sequenced a midi file of the song and wants to create a karaoke file for a sing-along. He entertains the elderly Jewish residents of a nursing home in Melbourne and uses a karaoke monitor to display the words. He is doing a good a good deed and I would like to help him out. I hope that answers the WHY.

Here's a partial version, from this site:

The Ballad of Doivd Chochett

To the tune of "The Ballad of Davy Crockett"

by Mickey Katz

NOTE FROM LORI: This was sent to me from a visitor to this page, who couldn't remember it in its entirety. His notes are in italics. If you know the rest of the song, please email it to me at sunybgrad@yahoo.com

Born in the wilds of Delancy Street
Lived on gilfilte fish and kosher meat

Lived in the wilds so he knew not a tree
Flecked him a chicken when he was only three

Dovid, Dovid Crockett; King of Delancy Street.

In eighteen-toiteen, he fought "Indianes,"
Den came the "Litvaks" and the "Galitzianes,"
??? redskins all over the shteitle,
He never lost his head...he never lost his sheitle.

Dovid, Dovid Crockett; King of Delancy Street.
He went down south, lookin' for a meidle.
Met a little tsatskele named DaisyFreidle.
From near und far, dey came to the "chippie,"
I think that's coloquial for "chuppah?"
Elected him president of the B'nai Mississippi.

Dovid, Dovid Crockett; King of Delancy Street

He went out west on his small horse, Schloim Sam?,
Took along Daisile, his wife, alles schoen,
Schloim hat g'fliet--like and air-a-plane,
He got to Las Wegas ahead of the train.

Dovid, Dovid Crockett;
(he vent up to the crap table with a full pocket)
Dovid, Dovid Crockett; King of Delancy Street.

He shot like a gembler, owner of die veld,
Up came two sixes...und drer d'geld.
He felt very sad, dat's my opinion,
He vould of said kaddish...but he couldn't find a minyan.

Dovid, Dovid Crockett,
(he lost his pants an' he vent home nahkid),
Dovid, Dovid Crockett,
He's back on Delancy Street.

Well, anyway, it's a start.

Now, does anybody know Mickey Katz' "A Mechayeh in Hawayeh" (or something like that)? I just noted the title as I was looking for these lyrics, and I MUST get it.

Aloha,
Mark
(Have a good Pesach, Rabbi)

Mickey Katz has been mentioned before in Mudcat threads as the author/performer of other parodies. This thread especially has some links to biographical information and a discography:
Lyr Req: Yiddish is the Kvelling Tongue

Searching the Forum for "Mickey Katz" will turn up more.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE BALLAD OF IRVING (from Frank Gallop)
From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego

Segue: This little ditty by the late Frank Gallop (announcer on the old 1950's "Perry Como" show) got a lot of airplay in its day. Gallop was one of the old school "voice of God" announcers, and he delivered the spoken lyrics straight. The piece was a parody of "Ringo," a spoken word pseudo western song by Lorne Greene, who played Pa Cartwright on "Bonanza."

THE BALLAD OF IRVING
Frank Gallop

He was short and fat, and rode out of the West
With a Mogen David on his silver vest.
He was mean and nasty right clear through,
Which was kinda weird, 'cause he was yellow too.

They called him Irving.
Big Irving.
Big, short Irving.
Big, short, fat Irving.
The hundred and forty-second fastest gun in the West.

He came from the old Bar Mitzvah spread,
With a 10-gallon yarmulke on his head.* [see below]
He always followed his mother's wishes,
Even on the range he used two sets of dishes.

Irving.
Big, fat Irving.
Big sissy Irving.
The hundred and forty-second fastest gun in the West.

A hundred and forty-one could draw faster than he,
But Irving was looking for one forty-three.
Walked into Sol's Saloon like a man insane,
And ordered three fingers of two cents plain.

Irving.
Big, fat Irving.
Big sport Irving.
The hundred and forty-second fastest gun in the West.

*****

(The following lines were edited out of the original release, and are only in
the version available on Dr. Demento's 20th Anniversary Collection.)

One day Bad Max happened into town.
His aim was to shoot fat Irving down.
Bad Max said, "Draw, and draw right now!"
And Irving drew, drew a picture of a cow.

Irving.
Big, fat Irving.
Big gunfighter Irving.
The hundred and forty-second fastest gun in the West.

*****

The James Boys was comin' on a train at first sun,
And the town said, "Irving, we need your gun."
When that train pulled in at the break of dawn,
Irving's gun was there, but Irving was gone.

Irving.
Big, fat Irving.
Big help, Irving.
The hundred and forty-second fastest gun in the West.

Well, finally Irving got three slugs in the belly.
It was right outside the Frontier Deli.
He was sittin' there twirlin' his gun around,
And butterfingers Irving gunned himself down!

Irving.
Big, fat Irving.
Big dum-dum Irving.
Big dum-dum dead Irving.
The hundred and forty-second fastest gun in the West.
Really.

*The line about the 10-gallon yarmulke was on the original LP, but the single
version and subsequent LP pressings substituted the line:
Schlepping a salami and pumpernickel bread.
This substitution was made because the record company felt the joke would be
lost on non-Jewish listeners. (mebrown)
