We have a week of events Sun 17th April Archie Fisher, Monday 18th Music Session, Tues 19th The Southport Swords & Argarmeles Clogs dancing out, Wed 20th Strawhead (for free), Thurs 21st Steve Tilston, Fri 22nd High Level Ranters, Sat 23rd St Georges dancing out with the Swords & Argarmeles & at night a reunion party, Sun 24th Stormalong John & friends. They've featured a wide range of performers, from the blues of the great Jo Anne Kelly, to the wonderful - but almost unintelligible - Jimmy McBeath. The team that run the club must be praised for keeping the club thriving for so long. |

Besides them, we had the good taste to take a chance on Mr Fox which alienated quite a few people and have always been at the forefront of er, casting our net wide! Cyril Tawney was the first guest ever engaged at the Liverpool branch of Bothy and if he were in good health, he'd surely be part of next week's razzmatazz. Not so Paul Simon though as he'd failed Tony Wilson's strict audition criteria in 1966! We can hardly ask him now -or can we?! |

Later on people like The Dransfields, Young Tradition, Swan Arcade, Mr Fox (aka Bob & Carole Pegg), Nic Jones, Tony Rose and so many more inc of course Martin Carthy. I WAS impressed with a 22 minute version of Tam Lin that Mike Cooney did though. We had him on a couple of times in the early '70s. I was probably at the pictures when Trevor Lucas was booked as this a tad before my time though John Smith did a tape of what I'm told, was a legendary performance. Pete Rimmer may have this cassette now. Incidentally I noticed a copy of Trevor's "The Overlander" LP going for £500 on eBay a few weeks back. |

I have some great memories of The Bothy from years gone by - but the one event that I have particularly enjoyed a fair few times is the Yuletide Office Party! Initially off-put by a fear of eating the sandwich of a well-toiled hand, I plucked up the courage to go to this event and was not only impressed by the catering provided by everyone attending the 'Party, but also the calibre of the Residents. You're very lucky indeed to have such a talented bunch on tap, something that us Northamptonians could only dream of. If we enjoyed dreaming of beardy types or an image of Clive claiming the World Drumming Record on the back of a beermat, or something. You're a credit to your sort, and I enjoy returning to The Bothy whenever I can. And that's whether or not my folks are threatening to get up with their recorder/bodhran or whatever. Well done, and happy 40th - you don't look a day over 60! ;-) |

(such is the Bothy advance planning system) The week is surely going well. Had a stay-back at the Shelly with Archie after Sunday's gig. He drinks brandy when off-stage! Our friend Frances had travelled from Belize to see him and was the awed fan again that she'd been 35 years ago! I think the dance teams have a friendly new potential regular stand if last night's reception at the "Park" in Birkdale is anything to go by. Friday's Ceilidh has sold out - funny old world innit? The reason we stopped having regular knees-ups a few years back was 'cos we couldn't shift even 40 tickets and were losing loadsa dosh. Maybe 'close dancing is coming back?' (Ashley Hutchings t-shirt - mid '70s) It'll be nice to be in my own bed tonight (no cheap comments please) -have been crashing in Birkdale for last 2 nights. Onwards, ever onwards................ |

Still hoping for a 'surprise' guest spot at tonight's High Level Ranters Ceilidh from Mrs Ross (aka Ray Fisher)Have done all I can to persuade her that coming 200 miles for a song or two, a glass of beer and a packet of crisps isn't a bad deal! We'll see. Meanwhile the week's pace is shifting its gears up. Was amazed at the good order Strawhead secured on Wednesday in a public bar - Greg said he'd had less background noise in many folk clubs. Last evening was excellent and weren't the Nelsons spot-on? We are so lucky to have those two in our area.I'll be helping out on the door tonight - I'm no dancer! |

There were so many highlights, all of the performers were first class, playing to capacity houses at all venues. It was great seeing all of the old Bothy goers, a lot of them coming for the week or part of the week from all over the U.K. inc Jim James coming from all the way from the States. The party night on Sat was special but the club night on Sun reminded me of what it is all about. The packed audience singing as one with 'Stormalong John', all the old shanties that Tony Wilson used to sing. I'm sure Tony was up there watching with a pint of Cains mild in hand and drowning the rest of us out singing 'The Drunken Sailor'. Cheers Les |
