It seems that about 85% of all the faxes that come to it are forms of spam advertising which I don't want, but I PAY for my machine to print them out! This is annoying. Most of them are from stock market bulletins, places that are selling machinery, places that are offering you a spot in a sales training course, holiday deals, stuff like that. I don't know where they found my fax number. Maybe it's just a computer that faxes numbers at random. Maybe not. I do keep getting repeats from many of the same outfits on a regular basis. In the majority of cases they have in tiny letters somewhere at the bottom of the page something about a number you can call, fax, or email to get yourself taken off their list if you don't want to receive their faxes. Hmmmm.... My question is: Are they on the level about that or are they simply trying to get more info so they can sell my fax number or my email to other spammers? I'm suspicious. ;-) I find it hard to believe these guys are scrupulous enough to bother giving me or anyone else a way to make them stop pestering us. Whaddya think? Are they on the level, and should I ask them to "take me off the list" or should I just ignore the whole thing and put up with continuing to get the usual faxes I'm already getting? Oh...did I mention the dating and matchmaker services? Ha! As if... Have gotten no Nigerian scams in ages, though. Strange. |

One sort of has to have all three, I think. Or maybe I'm wrong about that...? Carrier pigeons would be fun, but kind of slow. |

You set it so your computer answers the phone, and if it isn't a fax it takes a message. I've called a couple of friends and left messages and the friends didn't even know their computers were set up to do it so they didn't know to check the computer for voice messages! Look at the fax software in your computer. It may come with the modem, or be something you can add to your modem (download, perhaps). That's why they call the device a fax/modem. They can do both. Instead of keeping the image on paper, it stores it like a PDF in a file. SRS |

From: Jim Dixon I think that notice is there because they are required by law to notify you that you can get off the list, and required to take you off the list if you ask them. (Can't remember where I heard that.) Use of the phone lines is better regulated than use of the Internet. I have called a dozen or so distributors of junk faxes, and I do think they have quit sending them. New ones keep appearing, though, but overall, I think the volume has decreased. |

We had this problem at work a while back, but suddenly it stopped in several departments, whilst others still got it. The difference was a newer fax machine. I just wonder if they had the ability to block certain numbers, like the ignore button in the chatroom or a spam blocker on the computer. LTS |

From: GUEST,petr my favorite junk fax was on getting rid of junk faxes.. its too much energy to call everyone or fax them Id spend half the day doing it. If you get off one list theres always another. Seems the much better solution is to receive the faxes (using fax freeware) on a computer and then just delete them, and print out the ones you want. |

A link at the bottom of the page provides a place to register a complaint. Federal Communications Commission FCC 03-153 should get you the "new" FCC "Do Not Call" regulation. This is a 562 KB .pdf file of the full regulation, including the associated report and commentary. The same regulation that prohibits unsolicited voice phone calls to those who register with the US Do Not Call listing also prohibits unsoliceted fax advertising. The exception to allow unsolicited fax to those "with an established business relationship" was deleted sometime in 2003. The section on FAX is down at Article XIII, page 108. On page 111: "189. We now reverse our prior conclusion that an established business relationship provides companies with the necessary express permission to send faxes to their customers. As of the effective date of these rules, the EBR will no longer be sufficient to show that an individual or business has given their express permission to receive unsolicited facsimile advertisements." WRITTEN PRIOR CONSENT OF A RECIPIENT IS REQUIRED before any advertising fax may be legally sent. The unsolicited faxes you are receiving are in all likelihood a violation of current FCC regulations and senders are required by US Federal Regulations to cease on your notification to them. Cost of receipt and processing or $500, whichever is greater, is the established per incident "compensation" that can be demanded if you choose to file suit, and treble damages are permitted if the violation is found to be "willful." Most States have adopted similar regulations, and you can also check with your state attorney general or trade organizations for local rules. (and compensation possibilities?). John |

Plug your fax line into your PC and you're away. I use QuickLink II... a gem. Lovely! It records all the numbers. Pick the number you "want" and send them a fax politely requesting removal from their list. Now, some of these guys set up their fax programs to run and, once their faxes have been sent, to turn off. But, not all. Those are the ones who, if they don't remove me from their list, get a couple of hundred faxes from me. |

Doesn't stop the odd one getting through, but stops most of them & you can complain about any that do get through. Fax Prefernce Service |
