The song you want was sung by Seán Ó Conaire. I rather think that the lyric was printed on the insert; but if I had a copy of it, I don't seem to have it now. The information says that this song "was written by Na Casaidigh". Na Casaidigh recorded the song but I don't believe they wrote it. It's simple structure and polka rhythm made it easy to adapt - so verses abound. I can't honestly claim to remember the ones Sister ---- (insert an appropriate nun's name!) taught me nearly seventy years ago! Regards p.s. A corner of my brain says that Maureen Potter, a famous Irish comedienne, popularised an English language (or macaronic?) version based an writing "Sheamaisin" as "Haymachine" - which is how it's pronounced. |

Some of the words are different . An bhfaca tu mo Sheamuisin Mo mhuirnean og mo bhuachaillin An bhfaca tu mo Sheamuisin Ag dul ar sios an mbothar They have ‘mo stoirin’ for ‘mo mhuirnean’ and ‘is e gabhail sios an bothar’ I wonder also if they have put an extra verse in. I’d love to have the original song. |
