14 Apr 05 - 03:37 AM (#1460753) Subject: BS: HELP SCAdians, Rennies, Theater types From: Chip2447 Hey gang, Has anyone got patterns or links to Medieval/Renaissance clothing patterns? With the exception of T tunics and basic breeches I'm having difficulty locating clothing. I'm looking to create a variety of clothing for Faires/fests/Sca events, etc. My only requirement is LOW LOW cost (read that as being as close to free as is possible), Well that and kilts and breeches are much more my style than would be tights (shuddering at thought of this body displayed in tights...) Keep in mind that my body type is closer to the stereotypical truck driver rather than just about anything else. I'll take links, patterns, suggestions, clothing that you can't wear anymore, because you got healthy and dropped several stones. Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated... PM me if you need an email or snail mail address(In the States) Thanks again. Chip2447 |

Cut off the fringe and rub in brown polish or snow seal (I used both) to get a Faire look. Folkways has some good patterns, if you can find them and you are (or know) a real seamstress (seamster?). Hazzah!!! |

I got yards of gold velvet once for $2.00. Your library might have a pattern book, or local comm. theatre might have patterns you can borrow. |

15 Apr 05 - 11:42 AM (#1462211) Subject: RE: BS: HELP SCAdians, Rennies, Theater types From: GUEST,leeneia How much time do you have? Are we talking days or months? If the answer is months, if you live in the U.S., and you are anywhere near a Jo Ann Fabrics, then sign up on the mailing list for the flyer. There are days when the patterns sell for 99 cents, and most of the pattern companies sell Renaissance designs. They usually have a big sale on the weekend of every national holiday. And as Sorcha suggests, don't overlook the public library. ------- Frankly, if I had to produce men's trousers of any type, I would take a pair of factory made trousers and modify them, rather than working from scratch. Shirts, however, sound like a lot of fun. |

15 Apr 05 - 03:06 PM (#1462372) Subject: RE: BS: HELP SCAdians, Rennies, Theater types From: Raedwulf Oh, and {hint} don't talk about tights. They're not tights, they're hose, it's not Hollywood, you ain't Errol Flynn, they're hose, OK? Sure, they can be more or less skin tight. They can also be reasonably roomy, & if you're being SCA you have plenty of room for manoeuvre (no pun intended). Alternatively, you can go for the peasant smock that lasted all the way down to Victorian times.... |

This site has the more common pinwheel buttons but I have the wherewithals to make the more fashionable and more exclusive 'high tops' which were similarly made but over a small wooden hemisphere. Most dress pattern manufacturers now publish costume patterns in their catalogues - and the commonest ones (Vogue, Simplicity, Butterick etc) are available online as CatsPhiddle linked. Of course, if you were in the UK, I could do you a nice mediaeval gown...... male or female! LTS |
