Lyr Add: Connolly Will Be There (Dominic Behan)

For Big Mick as promised.

CONNOLLY WILL BE THERE:        Dominic Behan.

There lies a page in history when the workers first fought back,
When the might of exploitation at last began to crack.
From farm, from field, from factory, from workshop mine and mill,
A flame was lit, a beacon bright, that flame is burning still,
Connolly was there, Connelly was there,
Great, brave, undaunted, James Connolly was there,

When the bosses tried to sweat the lads, away on Glasgow's Clyde,
A voice like rolling thunder, soon shook them in their stride,
In Liverpool and Belfast, the workers lived in Hell,
Until at last, they organised and any man can tell,
Connolly was there, Connolly was there,
Great, brave, undaunted James Connolly was there.

William Mackton Murphy and his Dublin Millionaires,
Tried bribery and corruption, hypocrisy and prayers,
To smash The Transport Union, the scabs he did enlist,
But all the graft was shattered by a scarlet, iron fist,
For Connolly was there, Connolly was there,
Great, brave, undaunted James Connolly was there.

They say that he was murdered, shot dying in a chair,
But ….. of freedom, Irish workers don't despair,
From farm, from field, from factory, from workshop mine and mill,
That flame of light, that beacon bright, that flame is burning still,
Connolly will be there, Connolly will be there,
Great, brave, undaunted James Connolly will be there.

I'm not sure of the middle name of 'William Mackton Murphy' and I can't make out a couple of words in the last verse. If anyone can help, please, or I'll listen again and then possibly 'phone Dom's wife Josephine.

The leader of the Employers federation during the 1913 Lock-out in Dublin was William Martin Murphy

I don't think I've heard it sung - but I presume the tune was "Brennan on the Moor"?

Regards

Yes, Martin, tune was Brennan on the Moor, I'd forgotton that too. It was on the LP, Unity Creates Strength which I produced to raise funds for the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders sit-in in 1972.

Thanks very much, Jim. I love it, and will begin to arrange it straight away. In addition to doing lectures with music on Connolly, I really like singing the labor songs of other countries when I am playing for workers events in the States. This one goes in the programme.

Good man, ye are.

All the best,

Mick Lane

I spoke to Dominic behan's widow this morning and she told me the missing wors. 'But go march on to freedom, Irish workers don't despair'.
So it is now complete.

The only recorded version that I've seen is one on one of those anon rebel compilations.

"26 Irish Rebel Songs, Volume 2". Derry Records, 1997.

(If you'd like a copy Mick just PM me - tho I've still to master my new pc with CD/DVD RW etc!)

Another recording is on the very first Christy Moore LP, Paddy on the Road, under the curious title 'Strike Weapon'.

Jim, I am going to be taking part in the Great Labor Arts Exchange in a few months in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. I intend to do this one in at least one of the sessions. I love the drive of it.

All the best,

Mick

Another Dominic Behan song:

CONNOLLY DIES IN THE MORNING

Is there no one near to me
To say he'll stay and hear to me
As they take my Jim Connolly
To lay down his life in the morning

Weeping, wailing wearily,
Sorrow sadly dear to me
As they take my Jim Connolly
To lay down his life in the morning

For me he made a nation be
For me he faced the enemy
For me my brave Jim Connolly
Will lay down his life in the morning.

If anyone of you are interested I have an MP3 of this song ripped off the LP and sung by Dominic Behan. I also have LP rips of other artists. Seeing how they are out of print records from the 70s I don't think it would be a problem with me sharing them.

Dominic Behan - "REBELLION"
Declan Hunt & Johnny Beggan 45 - "The Charlady's Ball & Sweet Thames Flow Softly"
Declan Hunt - "The Battering Ram LP"
Declan Hunt - "Irish Revolutionary Songs Vol 1"
Declan Hunt - "Mark's Men - Stick 'Em Up"
Declan Hunt - "The Men Behind The Wire"
Declan Hunt - "Songs of the Irish Rising -1798-"
Fee McGorman - "Songs of the Irish Republic"
The Jolly Beggarmen - "The Very Best of Irish Rebel Songs"
O'Neill, O'Malley, Kent - "Irish Rebel Songs"
Patrick Galvin - "Irish Rebel Songs - Volumes 1 2 3"
Fogarty & O'Neill - "Ireland Boys Hurrah!"
Frank O'Dwyer - "I, Roger Casement"

There are pops & clicks in some of my MP3s from the records. I could've tried to clean them up, but I like them this way so I left them alone.

Declan Hunt & Fee McGorman are by far the favorites in my entire MP3 collection. I have approx 100 songs sung by Declan in my collection. Some are dups from compilations.

The Mark's Men album and the Fee McGorman album are my daily commute IPOD playlist.

PM me
