I'm a proper folkie now!

I'd just like to say - I am now officially a proper real folkie!

I realise this because I decided, if I'm going to sing folk music - I've got to have at least one incest song.
I've got all the murder and lost love and all that - so tonight I've had the old 'Bare Bones' out and I'm learning the nice and cheerful 'Sheath and Knife'.

So, in my book anyway, I am now a full, proper and real folkie with a full set of long and miserable songs concerning (I quote a Tony Rose obit. here - 'love, death, murder, rape and incest') :0) Excellent!

Do you hate all corporations, forms of capitalism, most religions, and pray to the ACLU every night?

Laura, by being born into Tony Rose's family, you were automatically an honorary folkie.

"I'm a proper folkie now!"

That sounds like the first line of a song...

It sounds like the first line in that Pull-ups commercial:

"I'm a big girl now."

I'm a proper folkie now, I am,
A proper folkie now.
I've a broken token handy,
Though I've lost my spotted cow.
'Twas on an April morning,
As the birds they sang so sweet,
I met a brisk young ploughboy.
He was good enough to eat.

As Sir Arnold Bax said (though he denied it and it is also credited to many others of a later vintage)

You should try everything once, except incest and folk dancing. But he wasn't a folkie.

So it's learn "Lord of the Dance" and you won't get back to being a normal person - ever.

SHE'S A PROPER FOLKIE NOW
Tune: The Devil's Nine Questions. (traditional)
New words: Stephen L. Suffet ©2005

Come and listen to my tale,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!
And pour a tankard of warm ale.
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!

Laura was a maiden gay,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!
Until a folkie led her astray.
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!

He plucked her flower from the stem,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!
And turned her into one of them.
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!

Now she drinks dark porter beer,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!
And sticks her finger in her ear.
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!

Before she utters just one note,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!
Seven times she clears her throat.
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!

She sings no jazz, nor pop, nor soul,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!
And never any rock and roll.
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!

But only ballads, ancient rhymes,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!
Handed down from distant times.
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!

Like the story of Lord Arnold's wife,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!
And the bloody way she lost her life.
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!

Matty Groves she took to bed,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!
The very next morning both were dead.
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!

Yes, those are the songs that Laura sings,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!
No hardcore rap, no nasty things,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!

Like all the young kids sing today,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!
Just gory songs from a bygone day.
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!

So maidens all take warning from me,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!
And shun the folkie's comapny,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!

Or just like our Laura dear,
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!
You'll stick your finger in your ear!
Oh, she's a proper folkie now!

Lenny Bruce used to do this routine about a man who gets discovered by his wife in bed with a chicken (apparently theres a law against sex with a chicken in New York State).

the wife says, how could you....with a chicken!
the man says, okay I was in bed with the chicken, but all the time its YOU I was thinking of........

You know that's one sexual tabu, I've never heard a folk song about. all these pretty ploughboys ...its funny I bet there was alot of it going on, but they kept quiet about it. all except the pheasant plucker's son.

From The Ball of Keerymuir:

The village shepherd he was there,
But he never made a peep,
He had no need for lassies,
For he had his flock of sheep.

Or is it The Ball of Kerrymuir? I'm not sure which spelling is right. Same ball, same shepherd, same sheep, either way!

One thing that doesn't seem to have been mentioned as obligatory is possession of a tankard - pewter or otherwise. Finally got mine about five years ago - just waiting for winter to get an arran sweater..... oh, and maybe I'll start using the finger in the ear technique which all my non-folkie friends seem to think is a necessity??

An Australian Bush Poet has a song he wrote called "I'm a Folkie"
I'm a Folkie; A f-f-f-f-folkie etc

Been a few years since I heard him sing it and that's the only line I recall.

The guy I'm talking about is called Jim Haynes: Does abrilliant rendition of "I Lobster and NeverFlounder" about a fisherman who lost his girlfriend - lots of puns on words using piscatory terms instead of the correct ones.

Though most of us folkies have IQs over 100, please don't require it of "The Folk". We'll have nothing left but a bunch of damn singer-songwriters. We need both the effite and the Tripple-E Feet to make it all work. And in the end, a lot of the folk prove smarter than we are, on occaision. When we are able to work book learning and common sense as an even trade off, it all works out.

As Will Rogers said, "Everybody is ignorant, only on differert subjects."

Janice: I believe it is Kirriemuir; at any rate, there is such a place.

As to sheep, in America we have "The Pioneers":

Great joy they reap from tupping sheep

In sundry bogs & ditches --

Nor care a damn if it's a ram,

Those hardy sons of bitches!
