PROCRASTINATORS BEWARE!!!

The deadline is quickly approaching and even though mine have been done for months, I still do not look forward to April 15th.

Are you still working on your taxes or are you all done for the year?

Let's from here on out consider April 15th just another spring day.

Open letter that makes sense

There's some pretty influential sounding names on this letter.....maybe we should take notice.

I guess businesses will largely be exempt from paying any of this tax because they buy wholesale?

Businesses (corporations) would pay NO tax under the National Sales Tax plan; of course, business owners and managers, etc., would pay as individuals.

The monthly rebate wrinkle described in the "open letter" is new to me, and alleviates the most obvious objection to this plan, that it is (or would be, without the rebate) absolutely and ridiculously regressive, throwing a much greater burden upon the poor and much less upon the wealthy.

Even with the rebate, money you spend on necessities (and luxuries, too, of course) will be taxed, but money you invest ~ if you're one of the lucky ones who can afford to invest ~ will not be taxed. I suppose that looks like a good thing for those who value investment above human welfare, but it still creates a situation that favors money earned by money over money earned by labor, and by extension, favors the rich over the poor and the paycheck-to-paycheck middle class. I think things are already tilted too far in that direction.

I tend to doubt it. They can just put their luxury purchases under the company name and use them under the umbrella of company perks.

Thens there is this controvsal "minimum alternative tax" which (wink, wink) was supposed to effect the super wealthy but guess what? The wealthy aren't effected at all but eh iddle class is feeling the squeeze... Like how did that happen under the Bush administartion? The rich getting a break while the working man gettin' screwed? Who would have think it???

But ol' Bobert got his in the mail and get $12 back from the feds and owed Wes Ginny a little over $700.... Hmmmmmm? All, I know is I sure wish it were like the olden days. You know before Bush's tax cuts because I'm paying more taxes now that at any time in my life and not making any more.... Like how can this be??? Well, my real estate taxes have doubled since Bush took office because the money the feds use to chip are now being diverted pay of Bush's corpoprate donors and making wars around the world so I, as well as 98% of the rest of America is paying for Bush's corporate fat cats, dieing in Bush's wars and paying for the right to die in Bush's wars thru the nose...

Screw April 15th. It has become the day where Boss Hog has his way with the working folks...

And screw Boss Hog, too...

(But Bobert, How can you do that while he's doing it to you?)

Nevermind...

Bobert

CarolC: You are correct, that might happen in the expectable order of things, and that would have to be prohibited and vigorously enforced and heavily punished.   It could be the real Achilles Heel of this suggested program.

Don't company perks get treated as income over in the States, and taxed?

I don't think so, McGrath, if they are owned by the company and just used by the employees, like a company car for instance.

Oh, man. That sucks, Pauline.

Re: this new tax idea... I'd also be interested to know how they propose to define the term "retail" for the purpose of this plan. Would business lunches, travel expenses for business purposes, and things like that be considered retail?

It sounds like the larger businesses will fare much better under this plan than small, home-based businesses that buy in smaller quantities. A lot of home based businesses buy their equipment and supplies retail from places like Office Max.

As one on the other side - we love it when you file your taxes early. March 31st/April 5th are popular dates, being the end of the quarter/tax year so we (in the UK, and specifically my office) get something like 4000 returns a week between 20 of us. That's a lot of paper. We presently have no overtime budget, no extra help drafted in and we have a 2 week backlog of returns to capture, thus meaning we've failed to meet our target of 98% returns logged/captured same day.

(Don't worry BritCats, it's company tax not Self Assessment - THEY get help from other departments, an overtime budget and lots of publicity).

So please, if you're still assessing yourself up to the day before it's due, think of the poor clerk whose job it is to wade through all your scribblings whilst the clock ticks relentlessly onwards.....

"Payroll witholding taxes are regressive, hitting hardest those least able to pay."

And that's why no administration, Democrat, Republican or otherwise, is champing at the bit to reform the U.S. tax structure.

Tax everyone a flat rate for all income over, say, $10,000. EVERYONE. The Catholic Church. The LDS Church. General Motors. Me. You. No deductions, no exemptions -- whatever you make over the minimum you pay a percentage to the gummint. Say the rate is set at 10% -- you make $12,000, you pay 10% of $2,000 or $200. You make $100,000 you pay 10% of $90,000, or $9,000. A TV church takes in $10,000,000 in collections, it pays 10% on $9,990,000. No quarterly taxes, no "anticipated income" taxes -- you make it, you pay it. And you should be allowed to pay it in cash at any federally insured bank or financial institution.

Simple, radical, and a graduated tax.
