At least it made me check out the meaning of the first one. Sailor on the taffrail - which according to my dictionary is the rail round the stern of a vessel. After I posted I went and re-listened to the CD and looked at some other notes, where I too had put fife-rail. I then looked fife-rail up in my dictionary - and it is there!!! It says 'Rail round mainmast with belaying-pins' 18 century. So I reckon that's right. Next time I'll check my facts before posting. |

I have heard that although Carpenter only recorded one verse and chorus he kept separate files of lyrics. So far I have not been able to substantiate the truth of this. This song is not listed in the Traditional Ballad Index or the Digital Tradition. It's Roud Number 22905.
